Advice please on my 15 year old cat

  • Hi, thank you again for your replies. We did put all 3 cats out last night, regretted that though when about 10 minutes later it started to rain....felt really bad! Came down this morning and there was one puddle of wee, so I can now eliminate 1 cat, Pebbles brother, as he can not get back in once out. Plus he came in like a drowned rat this morning...another bout of feeling really cruel! I know that I can not say 100% definately that it is Pebbles, but I know my cats so well that I am pretty confident in saying that it would not be my 12 year old.

Anyway, I popped in to the vets this morning to try and get some more advice. When I first took Pebbles to the vets in November he gave her an injection to help ease the irritable bowel, and said that should last for about 5-6 weeks, so I am taking her back down tomorrow for another one of those to see if that helps again. It would coincide with that injection wearing off as to when the 'accidents' started to happen again. He said the wee-ing could be linked with the irritable bowel, or it could be cystitis, but again I guess its hard to really know the cause. He also said to make sure I clean the area with diluted biological powder and then when the area is dry to scrub the area with surgical spirit or a spirit based cleaning product. Would anyone know what cleaning products are spirit based?

He also said to cover the areas with either a box or maybe her food (can't put down food in the area because the dog will just eat it anyway which I am sure will defeat the object), so tonight I will place something over the area. Its odd, but from memory, there has only been an 'accident' in the day once, it is always over night.

So hopefully the injection tomorrow will help matters, if it does not help, I really don't know what to do.
  • We have an 18 year old cat who has not seen fit to confine her excretions to litter trays or the outdoors for a good many years now despite many different strategies. We now have a pet gate which confines her to the kitchen and conservatory (and outdoors) - the other, younger, cats can get over it but she can't. This means that all her offerings are on an easily cleaned surface. She has a cosy bed next to the radiator and gets plenty of attention so this works for all of us. A friend passed the pet gate on to us as she had a temporary problem with her cats which was solved. I don't think our old lady even tries to sneak through if it gets left open any more.
  • I gave the area a thorough scrub with two new products that I bought, and last night placed a couple of chairs over the two patches where the 'accidents' would be, and when I got up this morning there were no 'accidents'!

We do confine Pebbles to the kitchen/conservatory area purely because that area is tiled/laminate, I do feel really cruel at times, but as we have just had new carpets throughout the rest of the house I really do not want any accidents on that! She seems fairly content to stay in the conservatory area, lots of chairs and a sofa to sit on, we are regularly out there, and during the day the other animals are shut out there too, so she is not on her own.

I am off to try and get her into her cat box now for a visit to the vets and that injection. She won't be happy!
  • 1. one of mine gets that when she sneaks some cows milk from DD's cereals.
    2. get a 'secret writing' pen from a toy shop (UV light). Switch lights off and shine the light. Anything cat wee related shines like a beacon.
    3. she's still getting blamed without unequivocal evidence. What if you get her put to sleep and the wetting continues. How would you feel then? You have to know the culprit - I have a neutered male who occasionally does little bits, only found when ex was in the process of packing the other one up in a box to be PTS for wetting - the UV pen saved her life, in fact, as it proved he was doing it in his bed - and his underparts glowed with recent use :) to confirm guilt.
I could dream to wide extremes, I could do or die: I could yawn and be withdrawn and watch the world go by.

Yup you are officially Rock n Roll :D
  • Jojo - thanks for the tip about the 'secret writing' pen, will have a hunt round for one and see if I can find one. I understand completely about the fact that we seem to be blaming Pebbles without concrete proof. I know for a fact its not my male cat after putting him out the other night and there being an 'accident' in the morning. The only other real indicator that we have that it is Pebbles, is that as she tends to go to the loo in our garden or on the pathway (and I see her do this all the time so I know its her), is the consistency of the poo on the conservatory floor is the same as what she has done in the garden. My other female cat I have never witnessed her use the garden at all to go to the loo. She also tends to frequent other houses as well so sometimes is barely home. I have thought about the consequences of having Pebbles PTS and then the 'accidents' continuing and I would be absolutely mortified, so I am really hoping that it is not going to come to that.

Pebbles has had her injection today, so fingers crossed it will sort the problem for a few weeks (also if the 'accidents' stop again now she has had the injection then I will know that it is her doing it).
