Mplex

Having used this shop to buy PC parts over the years I have found them to get expensive(and this is before the vat rise)I always found them good value but not so much now,I tend to buy of Ebuyer and with postage it still works out cheaper!

I too have used Mplex over the years.

Sorry to hear that they've got more expensive. What is postage from Ebuyer like for delivery to NI?

I got some memory for £42 anf the postage was £7,bringing it it to £49,the same memory in Mplex was £60!!,

The postage might seem dear but when it adds up its still cheaper!

    You seem surprised by this?

Obviously a large mail order company with no pricey retail outlet to support and possibly only specialising in RAM will be able to undercut a high street store. Its much cheaper having someone sticking ram sticks into a jiffy bag in a cheap unit in an industrial estate than paying staff to stand around in a pricey retail unit in a town or city centre.

I dont see the likes of MPlex surviving for very much longer. Too little profit and too high costs.

Apparently HMV are losing money hand over fist, and i dont think PC World are in good shape.

Will we miss them when they're gone?

There'll always be a place for shops selling new computers / laptops.
Some people just don't want to buy off the internet.

Mplex were really inexpensive, with decent quality components.
Sadly their nearest outlet is 30 miles away so the spin up and down is simply not economically practical any more.

I have gerned about to ebuyer for years about their N. Ireland surcharge (was once a min £15+VAT if I remember correctly). They stopped sending me emails about their "free delivery" weekends because I kept complaining they weren't. And they weren't if you were in NI.
So unless I'm ordering a few hundred quids worth of stuff, I don't bother with ebuyer at all.

Did you price Crucial for your memory?
Excellent service, usually 1-2 day delivery for the free delivery option.

But there probably wont be enough to justify running a business based on it. Plus the vast majority of the buying public is either computer savvy or have a son / daughter / brother / sister / neighbour / friend who'll keep them right.

People also use less consumables nowadays (fewer people burning CD's / DVDs and less letter printing as most people just email) so theres no money in that. Peripherals are way down in price and theres little margin.

Then you've the supermarkets flogging all that stuff cheap anyway, so even joe computer-illiterate can pick up a PC with their groceries.

Did you price the same RAM in PC world? Prob £120!

Sometime you need stuff now not later and MPLEX are quite hard to beat locally.

I've tried haggling in mplex before with no joy (buying 4 hard drives so over £200) wouldnt even take a penny off.

I bought a good few items from mplex. The staff are usually well versed in computers so you can ask them any question about the item and they will know or find out. I once bought parts for a system and they even helped give me advice about putting it together, you wont get that in pcworld or amazon phone support.

Thats the real value of a place like mplex.

There's an awful lot to be said for being able to nip in somewhere and talk to people about what you are buying. I've bought from them many times and also ordered online many times. If I'm buying standard components I tend to order online, but if I'm doing something major I prefer to go there, get advice and have somewhere to fall back on locally. You pays your money and you takes your choice.
