Has a trojan virus infected my computer?

I changed over to the infamous talk talk package in August and a day after downloading the disk my computer crashed. I thought it was that and had to reboot from factory settings.
I kept all the original stuff in a folder, games and stuff, but found i could only open in wordpad, which wasn't any good so just left it. Folder has now gone off my desktop.
I had the free trial of the TT security online, which expired yesterday, it ran full screenings and found nothing wrong. I changed over to the free AVG yesterday which ran a full screening and found 17 trogan horse viruses in something called e games. It deleted them but I'm now really worried about the effect it may have had. Could someone now have all my details and stuff? These viruses were in that folder of original items from Aug, before the crash.
I am sorry for going on, but I'm not very technically minded and will just worry.
Should I download anything else to protect my Computer from now on.
Thank you all for your help.

You need a firewall program. This stops any viruses and trojans entering.
I pay for mine, but I don't know if there are any free ones anywhere... Try this perhaps

avg is very good. you will find it needs updates almost daily but thats no bad thing.
we also run a program called ad-aware, or spybot every few days. (both free)
there is also a program called c cleaner (free) which I also use from time to time.
since we started running all these we have had no problems with viruses or spyware.
we also have a firewall in place which came with the ISP software.x x x0 -

NOD32 ...
I tried NOD32 and it missed some viruses on my pc (I was running tests at the time).
My preference is Kaspersky.
As for a firewall, Browntoa talks a lot of sense ...
