Father will be laid off in 3 months time with about 6K redunancy its voulantry as the option to stay was with a 190 round trip with no vechile allowance or working away.

He is 63 so though skilled and wanting work his chances of re- employment may be limited (he will no doubt apply for stuff).
His home is paid for and i guess he has about 40k in life savings.
Mum gets a non full pension of about £60 a week.

He says to me that due to his savings he wont be able to claim any financial help(believe hes guessing) is this true?

Though i know little about this i thought he could still at least get job seekers,a friend also mentioned pension credit but i know nothing of this.

I realise on paper they have plenty but over a 2 year period with no income theyll face retirement empty handed allmost but homeowning at least i guess.

Thanks for any help.

Your father could claim contribution based Jobseeker's Allowance (JSA) as this is not means-tested.

As an alternative Pension Credit could be claimed as your father is above the relevant age. Your parents will be assumed to have some income from the £40,000 savings as only £10,000 is disregarded but this does not prevent them from claiming the benefit.

After putting the information you have provided about your parents into the Turn2us benefit calculator it shows that there is entitlement to Pension Credit and Council Tax Benefit. Pension Credit would be paid at a higher rate than Jobseeker's Allowance.

    Hope this helps.

However, there is an issue in that your father will have left his job voluntarily; this usually incurs a sanction - a period of time during which you are entitled to a benefit but it is not paid. If the decision maker decides to sanction the claim this can be challenged by showing 'just cause' for leaving the job. Your father would have to show he acted reasonably in leaving the job.

That is not correct - VR does not lead to a sanction.

Apologies if this is incorrect, I do not work for JobcentrePlus but have been informed by a contact there that the situation with voluntary redundancy and sanctions is as follows:

The advisor would look at whether:

    1. the redundancy under voluntary terms would have become compulsory redundancy had it not been accepted
    2. the redundancies were due to the employer moving premises and whether it would be possible to commute to the new premises
    3. the person would still have a job if they hadn't accepted the redundancy

Apparently some advisors refer all such claims to the decision maker for 'LV' (leaving voluntarily) decisions and some use their discretion.

This tallies with information on sanctions I have read but to be sure check with your local Jobcentre Plus office.

Regardless, your father would be better off financially on Pension Credit if you can convince him to make a claim. It might help to explain that it is not a 'hand out' so much as his entitlement after years of paying into the system.

    Good luck

I have read the blurb under your posts and it says that you are replying to quieres about turn2us yet you post as the first answer in this thread and you gave wrong informaton, information that most regular posters know, where does this fit with your position here?

Your understanding is wrong. From the DMG:
The DM should treat the claimant as not having left employment voluntarily where
    1. the claimant
1.1 volunteered or agreed to be made redundant and
    1.2 either
1.2.a was dismissed by the employer or 1.2.b was not dismissed but left on a date agreed with the employer following an agreement on voluntary redundancy

I totally agree. Working for turn2us does not necessarily mean that a poster is knowledgeable about benefits (obviously!) and it seems to me to be posting under false pretences.
