Where to order Xmas meat from?

Our local Somerfield aren't taking orders for meat this year.

I started using them a couple of years ago when M&S got too expensive - found Somerfield meat tasted better as well. But this year, you can't go in store and pre-order for pick up in Xmas week.

Does anyone know if this is nationwide with Somerfield - or some stores only?
Otherwise, any recommendations as to where I can go this year?

Hate crowds, so I prefer to pre-order (no decent butchers in my local area).
Like the surety of having a turkey, ham and piece of beef or pork ordered - reduces stress levels!

Thanks

You don't say where you are, but if you are in the North West you might like to look at Gabbott's farm ... they're doing couple of hampers, which you can pre-order:

    "Rudolph's Nose Bag": £49.99
10lb fresh turkey or 6lb turkey crown, 4 lb roasting beef joint, 1 lb rindless back bacon, 4.5 lb leg of pork, 8oz rump steaks (x2), 1 lb streaky bacon, 1lb pork chipolatas, 1 lb steak mince

    "Elf's Feast": £29.99
8lb Fresh turkey, 4.5 lb leg pork, 8oz rump steaks (x2), 1 lb minced beef, 1lb pork chipolatas, 1 lb rindless back bacon, 1 lb sausage meat

    "Mrs Claus's Delight": £64.99
12 lb fresh turkey or 8 lb turkey crown, 1.8kg NZ leg of lamb, 4 lb Roasting beef joint, 1 lb rindless back bacon (x2), 1 lb streaky bacon, 20 chicken drumsticks, 9 oz rump steaks (x2), 1lb steak mince (x2), 1 lb pork chipolatas, 3 lb Gammon joint, 4.5 lb leg of pork

i've had meat from there before and its pretty good quality, the butcher i spoke to also said that if i provided my oven measurements he'd make sure the turkey will fit; if i want the £65 hamper but need a smaller turkey he'd make up the price difference with something else, so they're pretty good. I don;t think they deliver so if you're not in the NW, then you might like to look around for something similar near where you are...

    hope that helps!

Local butcher every time! Mine does me a turkey crown every year. 10lb of breast meat, all rolled up and ready to cook and carve. Cost £30 last year, but we had meat for 8 people for the five days, and no waste!

Thanks for the suggestions - but we don't have any local butchers that do what we want (Shropshire/Staffordshire border).
  • We have just ordered our xmas box from www.devonrose.com we have been using them for almost a year now and have never had one complaint. If their xmas boxes compare to the bbq box we had in the summer you will not be disappointed.

  • Waitrose turkeys are yummy. They are quite expensive, but if you have any pigsback points saved up, then you can get Waitrose vouchers to help with the cost.

I live in the North West and could get to one of their branches, and their prices certainly look good. Last year I ordered a free range turkey from the local butcher and it was £64:eek: I cannot afford that again and want to try and buy the best I can for the best price. Do you know if his stuff is free range? I just went on the website but couldn't find any info.

Might suprise you, few years ago my sister worked in a factory, they did bagging and pricing on meats. One day was ASDA, next M & S, Sainsburys, etc etc, all the same meats all very different prices.

I buy from my local farm and local butcher :) don't mind paying extra to support local traders, and the service is second to none.
One day I might be more organised...........

Waitrose's fresh turkeys seem to be a very good price to me, you can order for collection in store or for home delivery I think.
