New car with intermittent fault.

Hi there, looking for some advice and hope you can help.

We bought a new Skoda Fabia estate six weeks ago. Ten days after getting it, I was driving home from work and the car (which had been going along fine) shuddered twice and then cut out. Luckily I was near a lay by and managed to coast in. I did manage to restart the car after 5 minutes or so but this happened once more before I got home.
The car went back to the garage the next day (cut out with my husband on the way there )and they kept it for a week (admitting that they did not really know what was wrong with it). They changed some sensors and something else- can't remember what -and said that the potential faults on the computer were no longer showing.
However, was on my way to work tonight and the same thing has happened again. I was on a very busy road and only just got into a road end. Phoned Skoda assist who were going to send someone out but would take an hour and a half. Didn't really feel safe where I was so managed to start the car again and came home (it cut out again but I was on a very rural road)

They are coming to collect the car tomorrow and take it to the garage but I have now lost all confidence in the car. I generally have my four young children with me and am terrified it happens on a busy road with them in the car. It has happened six times in total now on three separate journeys.

Can I demand they change the car or do I have to give them another chance to fix it?

Any advice gratefully received.

I can't remember how many times they are allowed to "attempt" to fix it but imo i'd give them this last try. I'd also hand deliver a stern worded letter informing the dealer that if the car does not get repaired then you will be returning it under the SOGA

  • Thanks Rossy,
Thought I'd have to let them have another try. It's just a bit scary driving it when there's a chance it might just suddenly stop!!!

    I agree.

Don't use it until they check it out. Like i say write to the dealer and hand deliver it if you can or send recorded delivery. If they fail to reapir it then reject it under the SOGA (sale of goods act).

I'd also send a copy off to Skoda UK.

If they fix the car then request a full run down on what was wrong. If they do nothing the car won't have been repaired.

You have up to 6 months i think from purchasing a car where you can return it under the soga, but don't quote me on that
