£400 bill for 4 months for gas/electric for 3 bedroom house - is this right?

Hi,

I'm wondering if anyone could share their wisdom quickly - this is the first time I've lived in a house instead of a flat so I have no idea what the gas & electric bills should be realistically.

From 1st Sept - 9th Jan, our gas & electric bills have come through as follows for a 3 double bedroomed/double story house. It is a fairly old house, not detached, with 1 bathroom, kitchen & lounge (no dining room). We are with Scottish Hydro Electric & live in the North of Scotland so have had pretty cold weather recently so the heating has been on a lot (gas central heating & water, electric cooker).

Gas - 230 units used - £243.93
Electricity - 1041 units used - £142.96.

We are all students, so the heating is on during the day sometimes as well as we are not at work.

Rented house - landlord tells us he has insulated it but the house is cold fairly constantly and the double glazed windows are a bit drafty so who knows!

Is this bill what you would consider normal for a 3 bed house?

Thanks - just want to check we are on the right track!

  • sounds about right to be fair.....works out at £100 per month...in a 3 bed house I was paying £90 per month on DD

Those meter readings give avg of 55 kWh of gas and 8kWh of electricity per day which, I would think are not too bad at all for your location and situation at this time of year. Hope this helps.
  • Seems about right to me.

This appears to have been calculated on the assumption you have an old imperial meter.

Check that is what you actually have, otherwise you are paying about 3x too much ;)

  • Thanks great, thank you! Premier, I have just checked and we do have an old imperial meter - I was excited about overpaying for a minute there :) Thanks for the link, it's really useful!

My four bedroom detached house using my heating similar to yours, but less electric as only one computer on and one adult in the house.

    Gas - 247 units used - £264.72
    Electricity - 617 units used - £94.52.

My readings are for three months so your readings are are very good especially considering the weather conditions.
