changing from prepayment to dry meters for Gas and Leccy

Currently have both electricity and gas from Scottish Gas both on pre-payment meters.
I wonder if anyone could advise me about dry meters and duel fuel payments by direct debit,
Is this more economical?
If I was to do this would I need to make a payment up-front before dry meters were installed?.
Just to add i have no debt on either utility, just pay for as we use.

  • there have been lots of threads about this lately, basically, some companies will charge you, some want you to have been a customer for x amount of time etc etc. Ring your current company if you are happy with them and see what they say. You are required to set up DD by most of them now, and/or pay an amount upfront and/or agree to a credit check...all depends on their policy.

Most companys charge a similar amount per unit on prepay, but with DD you can access savings which can amount to hundreds of pounds...Uswitch estimated my saving at about £360!!

An average charge to change meter, if you cant get it done free, is about £50 per meter, but they may allow you to put that on your bill.
