Redundant

Good afternoon all,
On Thursday, I was called into the directors office at 16.50pm and was told I was being made redundant, which was completley out of the blue and told that this would be my last day. The company has lost a lot of work recently and my hours had been reduced at the beginning of Nov from 5 days to days per week.
Also at what rate is redundancy paid as my last 6 weeks of pay have been at a much lower rate, but for years before that I had been earning a lot more! Is it paid at your current wage?
Are you supposed to get a consulation or any sort of notice for redundancy, I have been with the company for 12+ years (since high school). I will find out this week I hope what my redundancy payment will be but am soo shocked as there was no indication that this would be happening! Are you supposed to get notice for being made redundant or am I barking up the wrong tree?
I really haven't got a clue about anything like this as like i've said it was my first job and have no experience in these sort of things.
Any advice would be appreciated.

Sorry to hear of your redundancy.
In the absence of any special arrangements made by your company, the amount of statutory redundancy pay is £400 ( lower if you don't earn that much) for each full year of employment.
You can calculate it here.

Some other useful info here:http://www.redundancyexpert.co.uk/how-much-statutory-redundancy-pay-will-i-get.htmlThat gum you like is coming back in style.0 -

Salient part for you is this (my bold)
"Both you and your employer are normally entitled to a minimum period of notice of termination of employment. After one month's employment, you must give your employer at least one week's notice; this minimum is unaffected by longer service. Your employer must give you:- at least one week's notice after one month's employment
- two weeks after two years
- three weeks after three years and so on up to 12 weeks after 12 years or more"

I think what youre asking is what weekly rate per year would you get for redundancy pay.
I worked for 23 years full time.
I then went down to 3 days a week. If i was made redundant tomorrow i would get the 3 days a week pay.
Unfair or what eh.
You should aslo get 12 weeks pay in lieu of notice plus any accrued holiday pay.
I would also look into the tax and NI position of your notice pay.
If it is not in your original contract that you will be paid in lieu of notice then its classed as compensation and therefore non taxable or NI able.
Could someone post a link to this rule please as Im not 100% sure. If no link is posted then call ACASmake the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.0 -
Thanks for the advice, it has just got more confusing for me!
The MD was at my door last night asking me to go back! To be honest i would prefer the redundancy as i know the company is really struggling and it might be better for me and my family if i am able to find a new job now rather than later.
My main concern is that I did not have anything about the redundancy in writing and so am concerned if I ask him to make me redundant he will try to back out of it.
I have spoken to ACAS this morning and they have advised the best thing to do is to see what his intentions are as its a grey area with having nothing in writing!!
So confused, i really don't know what to do0 -
The thing to remember is that it is not the person (i.e. you) that is made redundant it is the post.
Once a company have identified a post they no longer need then there is a process to be gone through in respect of the post-holder.
If your job no longer exists that is one thing, but they can't make "you" redundant as such.0 -

Surely the best thing would be to go back and get what you can but then try and get another job and if you get one move?
I'm not sure hopeing for a redundancy payout and then looking for a job is the best wayThe Googlewhacker referance is to Dave Gorman and not to my opinion of the search engine!
If I give you advice it is only a view and always always take professional advice before acting!!!
