Hoover 5 years parts guarantee scam!!!!

Approx 15 months ago I bought a hoover washing machine from makro for £159 thinking good deal, they would be a solid brand and further attracted by the 5 years parts guarantee advertised.
It broke yesterday (I think the drum bearings have gone) and so I gave them a call to find out the score only to be told that LUCKILY I was covered by their guarantee and that if I paid a small charge for fitting (as I was not allowed to have the parks and get an engineer myself) then I would also get a further 12 months extended warranty.
Imagine my surprise when they told me the small charge for fitting was £159!!!! When I told her that was what I paid the woman even tried to convince me that I was better off with the repair and warranty than a new one for the same price!!
Unsurprisingly I told them to leave it but thought I should post here as this is clearly a scam and I thought I should warn anyone considering buying a Hoover item for these reasons.

Its quite common this I had this with a fridge/freezer and it was almost cheaper to get a new one so I did. I am not sure you know or not but buying things from Makro you dont have consumer rights as purchases are B2B.Approx 15 months ago I bought a hoover washing machine from makro for £159 thinking good deal, they would be a solid brand and further attracted by the 5 years parts guarantee advertised.

should have gone to john lewis then.
a parts only warranty is worth nothing. the most common parts that do fail are cheap enough to buy off ebay.
at those prices, just skip the WM and buy another one.Get some gorm.0 -
I too got the 5 year parts guarantee with my Hoover Washer. I realised when I read the small print that to claim, you had to call one of their approved repairers and there was a minimum call out and labour charge. I worked out that even the simplest repair would end up costing about £150 and so I didn't even bother sending the registration documents off.
Edit - If you only bought 15 months ago you could try and push for a replacement under the sale of goods act (or whatever it's called these days. I gather that you can now claim up to 2 years after purchase. Have a search on this site and I think there is a section about it somewhere.

makro business customers are not covered by the usual consumer protection laws.Get some gorm.0

I would make a claim as the product sounds as though it is not fit for purpose and it is reasonable to expect the drum to last longer than 12 months (unless you have about 20 kids!)As is a tale, so is life: not how long it is, but how good it is, is what matters.0

can you not read?

Same happened to me....mine went within 9 months, had it repaired under guarantee....then it went again 5 months later...not covered by guarantee....will avoid this brand like the plague!!0

well it would help Ormus if you explained what the exceptions are. Also, are you a lawyer? If you are, too add that information would help. I think you may be as you have the same style of approach i.e. rude, arrogant and unhelpful

Not sure how Ormus's post was unhelpful. The post was clear and factual. In order to purchase from Makro you "must be authorised to purchase on behalf of a business". Therefore you are not a consumer and so are not afforded consumer rights.
Not complicated really.0 -
Hotpoint also have done this for years so they can claim they offer a 5 year warranty.
Either get a local guy to repair which will probably be cheaper or buy one with a 5 year parts AND labour warranty which is definitely worth having. unfortuntaely you will obviously pay more than a couple of hundred for such a machine
PS could you not claim under consumer law it is not fit for purpose.....0
