Just Seperated from my partner, tax creds help??

Hi, My partner and i have decided to seperate and I a bit confused as to where to start money wise. When I inform tax creds will they start payin me as a single parent straight away? Will they back date it from the date we split? I have no idea what im entitled to and would be grateful of any advice before I go babbling away on the phone to tc. I work part time and have a mortgage with 2 little girls so really need to start sorting my finances out!!
Thanks in advance every1 xxxxx

  • Hello
When we split up I worked part time and had a mortgage and two little girls too.
I called tax credit the day he left and they started my new claim from that date. The money was paid almost immediately (£108 pw). I also switched to an interest only mortgage to make it easier (but ex is still on mortgage as I couldn't afford it on my own, the lender said no on my wage). Because of this I do get lots of calls and letters from TC asking if I really am single!
I found TCs to be really quick and hassle free. Just try and get everything in your name asap otherwise they will keep checking up on you.
  • Hi Op.

Try inputting your details into the HMRC website at this link http://taxcredits.hmrc.gov.uk/ and see what figures it comes up with. This will give you a rough idea of how much you will be entitled to as a single parent.

You will then need to contact HMRC to end your joint claim and begin a single claim.

Any maintenance payments your ex partner makes to you to support your children is not counted as income.

Give them a call, they'll ask what date the change took place, and just give them the date. You will likely find that you have a payment in your account BEFORE you receive any paperwork, so keep an eye on that so that you can help with your budgeting and not overspend monies you have coming in.
Also make arrangements with your Ex to pay child support. You can do this privately or via the CSA if you think that collecting it might be a difficult thing in the future. Your girls will be entitled to receive support at about 15% of his pay - so definitely a big help in providing for the girls' needs.
You might also want to get in touch with the council, as if you are the only adult in the house at the moment, you will benefit from the 25% reduction.

With this calculator, it tells you what you could get from today's date (or whenever you you do the calculations) to the end of this tax year.

https://www.entitledto.co.uk tells you what you may get per week.

  • Oh and just remembered. Remove him from electoral roll as this flags up with TCs and they will refer you over to the Compliance Team which is a pain in the backside.

I guess it is personal choice regarding which site to try . For me , i just find the HMRC one easier but thats not to say everyone will .

    Thanks for the link Sh1305.

ps When i just used the entitled to this very second , it states that i am not entitled to any tax credits ! I have been receiving them for as long as i can remember:rotfl:Guess i am doing something wrong.
