Debit cards time limit anyone know

I know cheques have a 6 Month expiry, but is there a time limit that shops have to claim a debit card payment from your account?

I think it is 6 years, although I have not heard about this taking so long. See Debit Card question ...
  • When I worked for Natwest I think they said 180 days.
  • Thanks for you answers.

The reason I'm asking is because, I have two transactions recorded on money, one going back to April and one to june. I'm loathe to delete them in case they suddenly go through, but i have to take them into account when I reconcile my account - which is starting to irritate me slightly!

I think I will leave them for the moment until I can confirm what the actual time limit is.
  • I have a transaction for about £300 and odd from November 2005 and it still hasn't shown up on my statements, this was done using a Visa Electron card. Since the said card expired 6 months ago and the company in question has made no attempt to claim the money, I seriously doubt they'll bother now. A year is a very long time.

It makes you wonder how often this sort of thing happens!.

The legal limit for cheques is 6 years. But the formal 'custom and practice' date expiry limit is 6 months ... and few Banks will go beyond that on the premise the cheque has probably been replaced in the meantime or payment made by alternate means.

The same logic would appear to apply to Debit card transactions - but there appears to be no formal end date in the event the transaction is delayed.

Mine arrive remorselessly within a couple of working days of the transaction date. Be pleased to know where others shop if values are regularly unclaimed;)
