Smart phones in Australasia

I'm going to Australia and beyond later this year and would like to pick up my emails using my Nokia 5800 smart phone. I am concerned that if I connect to the internet whilst not in a wireless hotspot I might incur high charges especially if somebody sends me a large attachment. Has anybody got advice to offer regarding the general use of a smart phone whilst abroad ?

I suppose it would be a good idea to buy a local sim whilst there , and an even better choice would be load the smart phone with videos of the Ashes series just to remind them

Picking up emails is by wi-fi I assume? If yes, I would get a free sim (all companies seem happy to dish these out) and put that in abroad. That way, no one knows that number and will call/text and shouldn't affect prices since they are pay as you go.0

Cost will depend on your network. I suggest you buy a SIM card out there for data rates undr £1/MB!0

Get a sim out in Oz they are easy to get and would be much cheaper to use then a UK mobile.I'm not cynical I'm realistic
(If a link I give opens pop ups I won't know I don't use windows)0
