BT ups my monthly payments

Just got a letter from BT that they are upping my Direct Debit from £17 a month to £41.
The reason they give is that £17 won't cover my bills, which I found strange, so I went online to check my account and there seems to have appeared an outstanding balance of £150! Called them up and they have stated that it includes the connection charge for when I moved into my new house at the start of July.
However I'm sure I paid some sort of large payment to BT around this time and I'm pretty sure it was the connection charge, they say that would not take payment for the charge and it would be added to my bill.
Any ideas?

My May and August bills are still available to view online.
As you can view your bills online too, what does that tell you about previous bills?Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.0 -
Doesn't seem to indicate that I made a large payment, BT say it was to complete the oustanding balance on the last bill.
But I remember having paid a connection charge of some sort, I remember being frustrated having to pay the charge before they would connect me!0 -
Checked my old online bill and the large payment I made matches the final bill that I had.
However I still remember paying something towards the connection charge or I'm going mad!!
Will have find out about the whole, "we cannot take a payment towards the connection charge" which is what they said.0 -
was it not a long term deposit that you've paid? you're not able to pay the connection charge in advance, it always appears on the bill! The views expressed on this website, be they in text, pictures or sound, are my own personal views. Not those of my employer, its staff or colleagues.0

What I paid was the outstanding balance on the last account, if you and BT say the connection charge is added to the bil, I'd have to believe you. Mind playing tricks on me maybe.
Cheers all.0
