Someone help me re income tac etc

Hi all

I lost my job in November due to ill health and I remember as a child my dad used to get money back from the tax man if he lost a job, does anyone know about this? I was working full time.

I have contacted HMRC or whoever the company is but they werent really much help at all, it was a 10 second call, very desperate to get me off the phone.

Thanks,

http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/pdfs/p50.pdf Click on the link and Download and print off a P50 form

This form needs to be sent along with a section of your p45 (it will tell you exactly what bit of the p45 on the p50 form) to the tax office who deals with the tax matters of your last employer .

This may or may not be the tax office closest to your home. Ring any HMRC enquiry centre and give them the details of you last employer and they will be able to tell you were to send your p50.

A refund should take around 6-8 weeks.

You dont automatically receive a refund of tax paid though, presumably you are claiming Incapacity/ESA and this is taxable.

If you add all your eanings and your benefits together up to the th of April this year and it totals more than £6475 then no refund will be due.

I thought it better to link the OP to the p50 form to allow them to read the rules surrounding reclaiming over paid tax themselves.

It does state on the form that if they are now receiving any ESA etc then the refund (if they are eligible for one) will be dealt with by the jobcentre.

OP , have a good read of the form and see if you need to fill it in or not.

Sorry didnt mean to intrude. Of course your link was the best idea.

But I just got the impression that the OP had not even the slightest clue about how income tax works and sometimes these forms
are not for the faint hearted.

Are you absolutely sure on this?

    No refund? Whatsoever?

    Interesting. Wrong, but interesting.
If you haven't got it - please don't flaunt it. TIA.

    Not necessarily the case.....

It will depend on the amount of tax that has been paid (I'm sure you must know this). If she has earnt/received a total of taxable benefits £6495.00 or less by the tax year end - but - through the PAYE system, paid - say - £150.00 in tax when she was in employment, then she will be entitled to full refund of that amount. Even if the income is higher, she may well have paid more tax than necessary and therefore be due a refund; you cannot make a categoric statement without knowing all the details.

OP - whatever the amounts, you will not be able to make the claim until the end of the tax year. If you are in the benefits system, it may be a little more complicated. The HMRC helpine can be very good - but it is hit and miss and I think they hope that we can figure things our for ourselves.

    Hi all,

Thanks for your answers, my dad last night pointed me in the direction of our local tax office (wasnt even aware places like this existed so you should be able to guess how much I know about tax)

Anyway, the guy had a 10 second look at my P45 and gave me form P91 to fill out...

    My next question now is:

On this form I have to fill out employment history- company name, address and tax reference. My question is what is a tax reference?? I've looked on payslips and P45 and even the end of year tax certificate but theres nothing that says tax reference. Is it known as something else? Any idea's where I find it?

    Thanks,

    Thanks,
    I'd have said it would be on P45 or P60. I believe it/s 3 numbers / more numbers. mine starts 034 /
Signature removed for peace of mind
  • The code your looking for will be the employers paye reference

You will find it on both the p60 and the p45.
