Tesco Travel Insurance and ClubCard voucher value query

Be grateful if anyone can help with this:

I seem to recall other MSErs saying that if you use Tesco Clubcard Deals vouchers towards the cost of a holiday, then you need to get Tesco travel insurance because it's the only form of insurance which will cover the value of those vouchers.

Later this year, we're going on a package holiday, financed partly in the traditional manner, and partly by Tesco Clubcard Deals vouchers. The Deals vouchers (or tokens, I get lost on the various names Tesco uses) represent £800 of the holiday cost.

The booking was made in November and the tour company has received and accepted the vouchers / tokens. The company's Invoice, however, doesn't mention the vouchers / tokens at all. It simply shows that £1,000 has already been received towards the holiday cost, and the balance is due in a couple of months' time.

Bearing in mind the comments I've read elsewhere on MSE about Tesco insurance, I've been looking at Tesco's website for further details.

This has involved wading through 64 pages of the Policy Document. But unless I've missed something, the only relevant text appears on page 22, "If your trip is cancelled" section:
In the event of your flight being booked with AirMiles or by using Clubcard points, we will pay the cost of an equivalent flight to be taken within 3 months from the date of loss.

The word 'flight' is their bold text, not mine.

Nowhere else in the policy is there any reference to Clubcard vouchers /Deals / tokens / points.

In which case. . . does anyone know if it really is essential to go with Tesco Travel Insurance in a situation such as ours?

After all, Tesco's policy document makes no mention of package holidays, only flights.

And Tesco's Travel Insurance is -- from what we've looked at -- anything but good value (we're intending to buy a European multi-trip policy for the two of us, seeing as how our existing policy is ending this week.)

  • Hi

No, you don't have to book with Tesco to have your deals covered. I've been looking into this myself. I'm not allowed to post links so if you pm me, I'll let you have the website I found.

    Hope this helps.

Many thanks, bobbyoscar! The help is much appreciated -- and seems to put paid to the fairly widespread notion that Tesco redeemable vouchers are only covered by a Tesco travel insurance policy.

I've followed the link in your helpful pm and yes, the section of the policy from that insurer is relevant to folks using Clubcard tokens / points / vouchers (wotever!) in part or whole holiday payment cost:
If travel arrangements were paid for by Air Miles or by any other form of redeemable vouchers, reimbursement will be the reinstatement of the Air Miles or redeemable vouchers to their original account.

Seeing as how this insurer on a like-for-like basis undercuts Tesco travel insurance by a considerable margin, this is excellent news -- we're finding that from shopping to insurance and much else, Tesco is nowadays poor value-for-money.

Again, sincere thanks for the prompt help. :T
  • You're very welcome. I know I couldn't believe the difference myself when I was comparing quotes.
