Conhost.exe... .

I believe I have a virus but am not really sure what to do about it. While conhost.exe is present in my system32 files as normal, it is also present under C\Users\Me\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\conhost.exe My antivirus (MS Security Essentials) flags it as a potential threat and says that it will send the information off to Microsoft HQ which it subsequently does. A full scan using the anti-virus, Spybot and AdAware all show a clean machine. Does anybody have any thoughts please...?

Oh, in my next post I shall cut and post a HijackThis log if that will help... .

Thank you!

And now Security essentials has detected - and quarantined - Cycbot.B... Would just going to an earlier restore point solve everything...?

Would be well worth your while running a full scan on your system with microsoft security essentials, also download Malwarebytes (http://www.malwarebytes.org/mbam.php) free version is fine... update it and run a full scan with this also.

Theres also a few other strange looking files on your hijack this log that look like they may have been from a previous infection.

May also be worth you running a full scan using the microsoft onecare online safety scanner...

    http://onecare.live.com/site/en-gb/default.htm

After you have run that rerun and post your hijack this log again :)

Problem with just running a restore point is that the infection could well have infected your system restore files.

As above download the latest version of Malwarebytes from filehippo.com, make sure to update Malwarebytes before running a full scan.

I think that the problem is solved; thanks for the advice. I updated Malwarebytes then went into safe mode and ran it. It deleted a few things, a process which I repeated a few times to make sure along with running my anti-virus (and making certain my firewall is set as secure as possible). I might be speaking too soon but I think all is well. Here is my updated HijackThis log. The ones with (file missing) I have tried to delete in safe mode but they just won't disappear...

Looks alot better to me, those entries that i dident like the look of have now gone, as has the conhost entry so looks like its done the trick.

did you give the windows live onecare a run?

Wouldent worry too much about the missing entry files they dont look like anything dodge and the onecare scan may well remove some of those for you.

Left the Windows OneCare thing on overnight: it found a number of registry entries to clean up but no viruses. I think I've escaped! Thank you so much for the advice. Here is my final HijackThis Log:-

Have you run Malwarebytes in normal startup mode instead of just safe mode?

If not run a scan again but in normal mode check for any updates before scanning and post the Malwarebytes log file if anything thing has been found.

In fact if you could post the log file from your previous scan showing what was removed that would be helpfull.

I did run Malwarebytes again in normal mode (the quick scan I think) and all was clear. I double-checked everything by running my anti-virus, One Care, Ccleaner to check the startup programs and the above HijackThis log. I'm pretty confident I'm virus-free, just not with an especially tidy computer.

Howver, although I am away from my home computer for a few days, I can track down the old Malwarebytes log if that would be helpful to anyone... .
