Named driver claim on my ins - renewal confusion

Hi all - hope someone can help with my confusion.

In a nutshell last March my fiance hit a bollard in my car, car damaged but no-one hurt. He is a named driver on my policy. I made a claim, it was fixed. My ins company at the time do not have an exact amount for the cost of damage - when I rang them they said they have got £1000 in their system but they always put that when they dont know! We also informed his insurance co at the time, even though the claim was being made on my insurance. The woman on the phone (his company) tried to tell me his insurance with them was invalid as a result of his accident and would be cancelled. We managed to get this sorted and he is still insured with them now until renewal in Feb.

So my problem is that I am trying to get a renewal quote for his renewal (and mine too in March). I use the price comparison sites and they ask "Have I made a claim or accident in the last ... years.

Well I have made a claim. He has had an accident. Yet I am having to fill in that I have had an accident and claim as there is no option to say it was my named driver. And he is having to put that he has made a claim (though he hasnt) in order to declare the accident.

I am so confused. How do I fill these accident sections in without affecting both our premiums? Or do I have to accept that I will have to say I have had an accident and that he has made a claim?!

I wish I had just paid for the damage now instead of using my car insurance. Or I wish he hadnt been driving my car and driven into a bollard!

Thanks, i hope someone can help

Hi , just answer what is being asked for, that is, on your insurance you haven't had an accident but you have made a claim and on his insurance he has had an accident but he hasn't made a claim !
If the online forms are not flexible enough to fill it in correctly then you will have to speak to customer services. Sorry , I know thats not much help but if online forms are that inflexible you have no option but to ring.

As the above have said, you need to declare the accident on both policies. Don't worry too much, 1 claim, particulalry one of fairly low value (call your insurer and get an up to date value of the claim from them, or it might be stated on the renewal notice).

Unfortunalty the risk is perceved to have increased by insurers on both policies in this case because the driver causing the claim is insured on both of those policies. Both will see premiums rise (and should really as he is now assessed to present an increased risk on both).

The NCD on his own insurance will not be affected though (he didn't make a claim on that policy), so this should go up by 1 year (assuming he doesn't have maximum recognised by all companies) and will go some way to nulify the increase in the "risk" or "underwriting" premium driven by the fact he has had an accident. Your NCD will, sadly, be affected. Clearly because of the trouble he has caused he should buy you something nice and chip in a bit more for the cost of your premium this year!!

(NCD is a marketing discounting tool not an underwriting one - rating upwards for prior claims and downwards for years ncd is seperate within rate calculations).
  • thanks for the above replies! We both pay for protected no claims (9 years+ on both) but I guess that wont make a difference. Wonder if there is any point in requesting it this time?
I said to him last night that if this is going to affect us both for years I would have been better paying it in cash to mend it.

Anyway, I have done a price comparison site as if we have no claims made. Then I'm going to ring the best price (and cover!) from that list and go through it on the phone. That might help me to know exactly what to put for the questions in future. I just wish the boxes had an option to say "named driver had an accident" rather me having to say it was me!

    thanks again

The advice given above is not quite correct.

If the "guilty" named driver remains on your policy, then you only need to declare the claim against his particulars (ie once on your policy).

Similarly when the "guilty" party takes out his own insurance with or without you as a named driver he need only declare the claim against his own particulars.

But if you no longer include the "guilty" one as a named driver on your policy, then you would have to declare the claim that you made (thanks to his driving).

    As above,

Quite strange that you can't fill out the details against him, as accident's are normally declared based on the driver in some shape or form.

Just to add to the above:

On your policy I'd declare it as a 'Fault' accident (using his particular's)
On his polisy I'd declare as non-Fault accident.

Definition of 'Fault' is usually the Insurance company had to pay out and could not recover expenses from 3rd party insurer (and NCD is effected), as he did not claim on his insurance this is the default position.
  • thanks again

I am having so much trouble with this. I have spoken to two companies now and they just wont listen to what happened. I havent even tried to do mine yet as it isnt due til March. But his is due in February. They two companies I rang so far said he will have to say he made a claim. And he didnt, I did. I am just so confused with it all. I am happy to say he had an accident and that I claimed for it, but they wont let me. It seems so pointless having named driver cover if you have to say it was you who had the accident (in my case) and him who made the claim (in his case). I am done in trying to sort it out and am going to take a break from it for a few days.

    Thanks

As already posted, you don't have to say this at all.

As long as he remains a named driver on your policy, then you declare it only against his details, and he only declares it against himself on his own policy. So the incident is only declared once on each policy.

Only if he is no longer a named driver on your policy do you need to declare the claim under your own details.

    No. Poor advice.

He definitely would be lying if he says it was a "non-fault" incident! (And would get found out as the details will be on the CUE database).
