Lap top needing attention

Please can anyone advise I had a HP lap top and then suddenly 6 weeks ago it started switching itself off and wont load up windows. I have no idea what is wrong, as i did not want to spend money on it decided to buy a new one. Now the old one is at home here and I dont want to spend any money on it however it may only be something trivial and someone might be able to get it working again, I never saved anything on my old lap top so it just has pictures etc.

Can anyone advise what I should do with it, or any ideas, if I was to give it to someone to repair can they do anything with the stuff that may be still on the laptop, otherwise I just put it up in the loft doing nothing.

Please can you advise. Thanks

The data on the laptop will probably be retrievable with a usb hard disk caddy.

The switching of could be overheating, or a flexed motherboard, both fairly common on some hp models, post more info on the model and what happens when you switch it on

model is hp ze4906ea , it tries to boot and then i get the configuration screen and then is just aborts and keeps continuing to do this. I have no IT skills in this area so I am totally at a loss, I dont think it is overheating as when I switched it off 6 weeks ago, just tried again and it still says the same, I really dont want to fork out £50 to retrieve a few photos that I am not really concerned about losing anyway.

hard disk caddies cost less than a fiver, and it will also allow you to use the old drive as a backup device.

put some pressure on the keyboard near the top right as you switch it on

You don't need to boot it. You just slip out the hard drive, place that in the caddy and connect it to a USB port on your new computer. It then appears as an extra drive and you copy over the files you want.
Then you buy a new working hard drive for the caddy and use that as a regular backup device (which is what you should have been doing with your old laptop).
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)
