PC had a new power supply fan fitted by shop where pc was brought from - this was done Thursday and pc been working fine since.... untils this morning!
The following files are missing/corrupt
<Windows root>\system32\hal.dll
So I set the pc to boot from cd so I could try and repair from the windows disk I have....
Welcome to setup
This portion of the setup program prepares Microsoft Windows XP to run on your computer.
To setup windows XP now, press Enter
To repair windows xp installation using recovery console, press R
To quit setup without installing windows xp press f3
Tried first two options and get the following
Windows XP Home Edition Setup
Setup did not find any hard disk drives installed in your computer.
Make sure any hard disk drives are powered on and properly connected to your computer, and that any disk related hardware configuration is correct. This may involve running a manufacturer-supplied diagnostic or setup program.
Setup cannot continue. To quit Setup, press F3
HELP!! What do I do????

Banana Lovers
Buy your bananas in bunches of 5 on Sunday. Then arrange them in order of ripeness and write a day of the week on each banana in felt pen, Monday on the ripest, Friday on the greenest to save time making those decisions on a hectic weekday morning

Is bios listing the hard disk?
Not sure how I go about finding this out, but if its any help when it boots up and goes through all the guff on screen I have noticed that primary master is 0 and I'm fairly sure that means there is a problem?
Would re-formatting be the next stage? or have I got to have a whole new hard drive?Banana LoversBuy your bananas in bunches of 5 on Sunday.
