i went onto virgin media webpage and ordered tv,broadband and phone all went through ok got a date was coming to install.

i get an email telling me that they can not come and install as there is an outstanding balance at this address . i put on the aplication bit that we moved in may 10 ...and gave my previous address. doesn't tell me to ring and sort it out just says i can not have it ?

You may get better responses on the Digital TV board.

I've never had Virgin but it sounds to me like the previous occupant did not pay their final bill (or any of their bills) and as a result the address is flagged on the Virgin's system.

You may want to try contacting Virgin's customer services and see what they say. As you're not the person who owes them money it would be foolish of them to turn down your custom.

Previous poster is right. It will be the automated system that has caboshed it but I am sure if you call and speak to aomeone they will sort it out for you.

It's also better to haggle with a real person too. When I joined them I haggled and got my services for less than new customers on their website :)

Do not go with Virgin Media (formerly NTL). They are useless. Most likely the previous owner paid their bill just fine, but it normally takes VM around a year to deal properly with account closures. At least that's what happened the last two times I foolishly took out an account with them. I ended up being threatened with bailiffs, because I "hadn't paid the bill" for an account I'd been trying to close for months.

I've been with Virgin since i got my computer about 3yrs ago, i've got nobody to compare them with but i'm quite happy. My Internet has gone off a couple of times but all it's taken was a phone call and they talked me through the problem and within 10 mins i was back on-line.
I suppose there's good and bad can be said with most companies.

All will most likely be fine until the time comes when you want to cancel your contract. *That's* when the problems will start.

Weird. When I moved into my current address, the previous occupants had done a runner without paying the bill. The customer services at VM told me they'd cancel the account and send an engineer the next week to install

They've been great in my experience, we've had them at home for years (10+), and both student houses I was in we had it too, we had no problem cancelling when we moved out. One of those student places had previous tenants that had run off not paying anything (including cable), we had no problems convincing Virgin Media we were new tenants. A relative of mine has recently cancelled cable too, he had no problems just rang up to cancel and had to send the box back.
