Double Glazing

Options
Hi everyone,
A friend of mine has just ordered Double Glazing and she is having 9 windows and 2 doors done. She is paying £3,500 but i think it is a lot of money. Does anyone else agree with me? I am not really sure the prices of double glazing.

It's certainly more than I paid.

Not saying it's to much but what I would recommend is to go with a local recommended company rather that those cowboys you see on the national TV. They offer these amazing deals for a every good reason ;-(

I went with a local company that was recommended by friends, they was not the cheapest (but was willing to haggle and did so) but I knew what I was getting. So much so that I recommended them to a neighbour and so on ......

This what they want and it's in they interest to make sure your happy rather than somebody who lives at the other side of the country.

    Hope it helps
    Regards,
    Dave

  • Obviously depends on where you are in the country, size of windows and doors, etc, but it doesn't sound too bad to me. I've just paid 1250 for new front doors (narrow double doors) and two kitchen windows. My in laws paid the same for just their double front doors and they live around the corner - I think they were had!

I hope your friend got more than one quote - this would tell you whether a particular company was overpriced. Generally the large national companies will charge more than local companies, but the service is no better.
  • It really depends on the size of the windows and also the door.

Doors tend to cost in the region of £1000!

My sister in law has rather large windows in her Edwardian house, and she is getting quotes now and realising how costly they are!
  • £1000 for doors? Sounds very expensive to me.I supply and fit doors for £300/400 depending on style. It's difficult to say if that price is fair or not without knowing window sizes and styles but if it is a bog standard house then it is a little pricey but not exorbitant. For instance,i am expecting to pay £1400 ish to buy two bay windows for my house and that's supply only at trade prices.Add in £600 for my french doors and that's £2000 without the rest of the windows and fitting costs.

A good rule of thumb is to check prices to fit yourself at Wicks or somewhere similar ( just ring up with window sizes and ask for prices if you have not got a local store) and a good rule of thumb is that you pay the same again for getting them fitted. You should not pay any more than this and the more you have the cheaper the fitting as a % of the windows price.

I also have just purchased some windows via a friend who says he his getting them at cost.
    1 x bay 3 sided. 1 x front door. 2 x large windows. 1 x small landing window.1 x set french doors medium size to replace a flag frame.
    Supply only is £2100.
As above poster said there are so many things to consider eg,quality of product, panel in door eg,bevelled glass, toughened glass for windows not above 800mm from floor of which the bay and the large windows are.
I know I can get cheaper but these windows are good so I have decided to use these.
Hope this helps a wee bit.

It's almost impossible to compare a quote just on price. So many factors can make a difference. We haven't got anywhere near enough information on this thread to be able to talk about this price. Style of windows/doors, size of windows/doors, what system has been used, where abouts in the country is this?

After nearly 25 years in the glass/window trade, I wouldn't even consider Wickes windows. I would only consider Rehau myself. There are massive quality differences between systems, and price variations to go with it. I only ever work with Rehau now because I know and trust the quality of the product.

  • I'd second that. You get what you pay for and Wickes windows are rubbish. Not used Rehau personally but know they are good.
  • I think it sounds a fair enough quote but do get others for comparison. 3 years ago I paid £3200 for 5 irregular windows (either very wide or very high!), one front door with glass panel and also pane above it, one very wide set of french doors and one narrower set of french doors. I thought this a fair price at the time due to the size of the French doors....
