I'm interested to know what other free software people use.
Hopefully we can build a long list of useful software.
To get things started......
Free Web Browser - Firefox
http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/
Free Anti-Virus - AVG Free
http://free.grisoft.com/doc/1
Free ISO Viewer - MagicISO Free version
http://www.download.com/MagicDisc/3000-7970_4-10587931.html?tag=lst-0-2
Edit:
Please make sure you list freeware and not Shareware as you are supposed to pay for Shareware. Thanks

Try openoffice.org for a great free alternative to MS Office. http://www.openoffice.org/
FIrefox and VLC are also great.
If you want a completely free and open source operating system that's easy to use and has excellent community support then try Ubuntu http://www.ubuntu.com/
If you have any questions then just go to the forums http://www.ubuntuforums.org/0 -

and since we're in a forum about money management there's always Gnucash

As with anything you download, make sure you trust the source, run it through a virus checker and of course backup your important files before you install.0 -
If were talking freeware ONLY then my first installs are Hide Outlook Express it keeps OE sitting in the systray and checks email however often you tell it to, it's a cool app and looks something like this.

Also another fav is something called TClockEx it sits in the systray again and gives you not only the time but also the date, very handy for me as my memory is disgusting and that's on a good day and it looks something like this,
I must admit his choice of colours is awful but each to his own and you can change these as you wish.
Another freebie is CDex it's not vital only use that as needed, but 2 good things about this app, one it's free and 2 no need to install anything just unzip it any folder and run so simple.
Well there may freeware that go on as a rule ASAP but also others like quickpar, YencPowerPostA&A11b, Cool Beans NFO Creator, and the list goes on.

There are some (acknowledged by the author) display issues with XP systems so I found TClock Light which does exactly the same but is cosmetically superior:

Any advice that you receive from me is worth exactly what you paid for it. Not a penny more or a penny less.0 -
On the games front:
Backgammon here: http://www.gnubg.org/
