I think I broke the glowplugs accidently by tightening them up too much but they didn't break straight away it was months and months after I changed them a warning light came on.
If you don't understand the concept of torque, recommend not attempting to tighten or change glow plugs in the future. The service manual for the car/Haynes, and sometimes the packaging of the glow plugs themselves, will have a specific torque to which the plugs should be tightened to using a torque wrench - reason is otherwise damage may occur, such damage as making the plug impossible to remove.

This does not excuse the garage's incompetence though and hope you get it sorted.

I definately won't touch them again! Hindsight is such a wonderful thing but thought I'd save some money doing it myself which I now realise has actually cost us a lot of money, time and stress.

  • I realise a long time has past since my initial post but the garage's insurance company have admitted liability end of March. The car has been stripped down been inspected so many times by so many people and the insurance company has declared the car to be beyond economical repair on Tuesday. They offered us a payout for the car which I declined as it was too low and finally today agreed a figure £1k more than the initial offer. We had to purchase a replacement vehicle as a hire car was never offered to us and the insurance company have refunded the cost of buying it. We also incured other bills from Toyota, postal charges and calls which have been refunded by the insurance company as well as a payout of £2200 for loss of use and inconvience caused to us.

Thank you all for the advice you gave me and the spur to do something about the terrible incompetence of the garage.
