Re-locating Gas Boiler

Afternoon all,

We have just moved into our new home and need to fit a new kitchen, however the gas boiler is in the way so we want it moved to the utility. I had a plumber around and he said its not too hard a job and no more than 1 days work. Then we recieved the quote in the post for £549 +vat.

This seems extortionate, or am I being tight-fisted? I was thinking no more than £300.

Thanks

Phil

We had the same problem a few months back where we wanted the boiler moved about a meter from the midde of the kitchen more towards the corner. We were quoted £500 again for just a days work. In the end we got the kitchen installers to sort it with their gas sub contractors who did all the other gas work in the kitchen - for an additional £200 on the cost of the kitchen overall

seems a bit steep. we paid around that for the fitting of our new boiler, but that was a full replumbing job moving the boiler upstairs, changing water tank etc as it was a combi and putting in chimney flue.

you need to get more quotes.

Here we go again someone who thinks a tradesman should be paid poor money for their work, you would have no hesitation paying a solicitor £550 for a FEW hours of advice, yet paying a fully qualified, trained CORGI reg plumber, and probably a mate, £550 for a days work is too much ?

My advice go out and employ a polish worker you'll probably get it done for £40

    Oh yes I would, £550 +vat £646, that’s nearly 3 weeks wage for me.

I would have no hesitation using a Polish gas fitter so long as he was a ‘competent person’, I have worked with a few Polish people in the past they were all friendly, polite and conscientious workers.
I love my spell checker, it stops me making all sorts of stupid smelling mistakes.

For a normal boiler it should only be around £200 to move pipes, and refit it in a close location. Depends on the electrics etc. Would be more for a high efficiency one.

    I agree, expensive Solicitor!
  • It cost us £400 just to move the boiler about 4 cupboard spaces along the wall.

My impression was this part of the site was for those of us who genuinely don't know if a job should cost £10 or £10000. I have no problem (as I'm sure the OP does'nt) in paying the going rate, but no-one wants to pay over the odds if it's not necessary. Hence, 'Is it fair?'
Someone please correct me if I'm wrong, wouldn't be the first time :o

    Way too much.
His "mate" will be some 17 year old who hasn't a clue and is paid £30 for the day.
Get more quotes and watch it halve.

Yeah, agreed. It's well known most tradesmen are a rip off - they aren't doctors after all.
