in Cutting tax
:oJust a quick question for all you tax experts.
If someone started work on November the 15th 2010 earning £15610 a year with the standard tax code would they be able to claim their tax back in April 2011?
Thanks in advance.

Assuming a PAYE system and normal tax code, no. As it calculates the appropritate amount.
If taxed the wrong amount they can calculate what they should have paid against what they ahve when they get a P60 in April/May. If it does not add up, then yes, tax can be reclaimed.0 -
What if their earnings for the financial year amount to less that £6475?0

what tax code are you ( they) on ??? What where they doing before - how long was the gap ? Basically...if you are on the correct tax code then no tax will be due as it will calculate the correct tax to pay. If not on the correct tax code...then yes...as soon as P60 is received then any tax overpaid for the year can be reclaimedI have had brain surgery - sorry if I am a little confused sometimes0

I would also suggest that if you are on the wrong tax code you try to get it sorted before the year end to avoid having to wait for your rebate.0

Sorry to be a little cryptic. I was trying to be discrete, not one of my strongest points :rotfl:
The info is for my son who was in full time higher education until the beginning of the summer, a brief stint on JSA and then from November 15th in full time employment with the standard tax code 647L.
The way I see it is if he hasn't earned or received (is JSA included?) £6475 during the financial year then he should be about to claim it all back after April. But I don't know if it's as simple as that???0 -
with the standard tax code 647L.
If no wk1/Mth 1 suffix at the end then he is on the correct cumulative code and will not overpay tax.The way I see it is if he hasn't earned or received (is JSA included?) £6475 during the financial year then he should be about to claim it all back after April. But I don't know if it's as simple as that???
JSA is included. Did he hand them his P45 when he started work?
If he earns less than £6475 including his JSA then yes he could claim it back. However on a 647L tax code with no suffix that should not happen.
Has he been paying tax since he started in November?0 -

JSA is included.
If he is on the correct code he won't pay any tax to start with (he will start next April) - if he's not on the right code he will be able to claim it back0 -
OK thanks everyone. He's just told me his tax code is followed by the letters NONCU so I think that's 'emergency tax'
That would explain it.
I've advised him to ask his payroll office about it.0 -
so I think that's 'emergency tax'
It is emergency code. As a consequence of completing Box 'B' on a P46 (my only job ...... but JSA claimed ..). Means he is getting his personal allowance on a monthly basis ..... but not accessing the unused allowances from April.
You need to ascertain where the P45 from DWP is?If you want to test the depth of the water .........don't use both feet !0 -
I'll suggest he have a dig around to see if he's got his P45 although he said he thought he'd taken it in when he started in November.
I'm trying to leave it up to him (as he's a working adult) but it drives me nuts that he's just so laid back, and he may or may not get round to it sooner or later, ha ha!0
