Transco have left my property a mess
Hi,
So we had to have our gas switched off for 35 hours due to leak outside our house, in order to correct the leak and reconnect us they needed access to our property, which was fine BUT they have completely destroyed one half of the cupboard in the porch and left us with numerous pieces of wood that used to be a cupboard. The paintwork is chipped down to the plaster on the walls where they've hacked the cupboard out.
Are they allowed to do this? Am I within my rights to demand they come back and fix their mess?
Kelly

where in the country are you as transco do not exist and have not done so for 6 yrs, it would be one of 4 companies you would need to call about this
if in London or the midland or north west it would be National Grid, 0845 605 6677
If in the north such as tyne and wear, most of yorkshire except south yorkshire you would need to contact Northern Gas Networks - www.northerngasnetworks.co.uk
if in the south west or wales then it would be wales and the west utilies
If in south london the south east then it is southern gas networks
if in Scotland it would be scotland gas networks (which is the same company as southern,I am responsible me, myself and I alone I am not the keeper others thoughts and words.0 -
according to the leaflet that national grid left me after they did work, they will return any area to its previous state, but that it may take a little while if they have to get a sub contractor to do the work.

I have a similar (but worse!) problem!
My deceased mother-in-laws house has been up for sale for 2 years, and has been empty all that time. Back in April Balfour Beatty obtained the keys from the estate agent to cut off the gas to the house temporarily while they installed a new gas main outside. They failed to reconnect the gas when finished. Accordingly, in the cold weather this winter, the frost stat on the CH failed to come on-due to no gas supply. The resulting burst pipe brought down 2 ceilings, and ruined the wooden floors. We are in a battle with BB for them to repair the damage.Any advice appreciated...Debt-free...and staying that way...0 -

I know this might not be what you want to hear...
But...
If a property is empty for a while it really should be drained down completely, obviously this was the fault of someone else but, if the boiler did fail on its own this would be the result.
No insurance company will touch it as the property was empty and should be drained down.
Sorry for that
But you may be lucky with BB and get something out of them, but it wont be through their insurance.0 -
Why did they hack the cupboard out ? was there adequate access to the meter etc?just wondering why the cuppboard was broken0

if its a safety issue, which if a cuboard is there it shouldnt obstruct0

Soz, but another requirement of almost all unoccupied property insurance is that it is inspected about once per month.
As the gas was cut off in April, seems like you haven;t been back for a long time
Also, whilst they will cut the gas off to an uoccupied property, they will not re-connect without someone being present. If you'd visited the property, you'd probably have found a card asking you to get in touch os that reconnection could be made.
(although perhaps not if you also need to seal the letterbox as part of the insurance requirements)
With no heating in place, then as rockin_plumber says, all water & heating systems would need to be drained down (and supplies turned off) as part of almost any insurance policy."Now to trolling as a concept. .... Personally, I've always found it a little sad that people choose to spend such a large proportion of their lives in this way but they do, and we have to deal with it." - MSE Forum Manager 6th July 20100 -

They told my husband that they had to do it to get to the meter or else we'd have to wait an additional 24 hours at least to get the gas put back on. I wouldnt say it was obstructive in any way but the meter WAS in the cupboard!0 -
tyne and wear is Northern Gas Networks not National Grid .........visit www.northerngasnetworks.co.uk for contact details.I am responsible me, myself and I alone I am not the keeper others thoughts and words.0
