anyone know where to get cheaper alternatives for boxes to fit ikea Expedit shelves?

We are thinking of buying some of the Expedit range at Ikea and will need about 10 storage boxes for it. This will be around £90 in horrible plastic boxes that are made to fit it or £130 in wicker baskets from Ikea.

I have done a bit of an internet search for other boxes to fit but any I find are similar prices.

I have also thought about covering the fronts of the clear boxes after finding a great website (ikeahacker) but that will still cost us over £100 for DIY covered boxes:eek:

I thought I would do a post just in case any one has found a place that does lovely baskets, the same size somewhere else cheaper ??

The size needed is

Width: 33 cm
Depth: 37 cm
Height: 33 cm

Thanks in advance

  • I have Expedit shelves too, have you seen the 'DRONA' storage boxes IKEA make to go with it? (I'm unable to post a link I'm afraid).
They're fabric covered with a solid base, much cheaper than the wicker baskets etc. (about £3 per box) but they're only in black and pink I think.
  • I got some lovely wicker baskets from Dunelm Mill last weekend for £2.99 each which fit lovely.

My boys have an expedit unit in their room and I bought these boxes thinking I was getting a bargain, they have only lasted about 6 months and all bar two need replacing, it may be better to get something a little sturdier, depending, of course, on what your storing in them
