am i entitled to any help

I am currently working part time but am going to have to give up work as my mother in law who is our babysitter is now unable to carry on looking after my son. i am living with my partner who earns about 20k per year if i were to give up work am i right in thinking i cannot claim any benefit. currently i recieve child benefit and 30ish pound a month on tax credits.
How could i find this info out.
also im on a dmp at the moment as i owe 10k this is on my own nothing to do with my partner. if i was to give up work do you think i could change the amount i pay as its £100p.m currently.
I appreciate any help or advice

  • With an income of 20k i doubt you will qualify for anything except child tax credits claimed in your partners name on his income.
  • Speak to whoever arranged your DMP about reducing the payments. Your creditors may not be very happy though....

The tax credits should be assessed on joint income, and the recipient doesn't have to be working (unlike working tax credit) so no reason why OP shouldn't have these in her own name.

Im not sure but someone here with more experience will be able to direct you more but is there not some element of tax credits that can help with child care costs? This way you wouldn't need to give up work. I appreciate that it may not be ideal to have a non related person looking after your child, however considering giving up work at the expense of the tax payer isn't a great idea either!
Not having a go, just my POV :D
