Connecting laptop to TV how to get sound from TV

I have an acer aspire laptop which I have connected through HMDI cable to my TV. I have got the picture fine but can anybody advise how I can get the sound through the TV rather than the laptop?

In your audio settings you need to change output from the laptop speakers to output through hdmi.

I have checked in sounds and there does not appear to be the option to change to HDMI

What OS are you running? On Vista or Windows 7 you right click the speaker icon in the tray (next to the clock) and click Playback devices. Then you right click the HDMI audio option and select "Set as default device". You might need to right click and select "Show disabled devices" if it's not there.

In that case I'm not sure. I know on desktop computers not all graphics cards (especially older ones) have a built in sound card and you have to connect a pass through connector from the soundcard to the graphics card in order to get HDMI audio working.

Are you sure its a HDMI port on the Acer if so the audio should be automatically connected with the video into the TV via its HDMI
If the Acer has a VGA connector and you are using this it only connect video signals. You will need a separate audio lead from the laptops headset socket to a audio socket normally adjacent to TV's VGA socket

On my pc recently I tried a dvi to hdmi adapter and then to tv - no sound, even with digital output on m/board connected to graphics card. The solution.... was to change from digital passthrough setting in my digital audio manager prog. So I would have a look around in both realtek digital output and hd audio sections.

carol7 - looks like you're missing drivers for your sound card, if those things are coming up as disabled. Try to find the drivers for your sound card, the Acer website will have the most up to date ones.
