Is my pay right?

Hi, I had nine and a half days holiday left this year which I did not take, my boss said he would pay me for them. Is there anywhere online I can check to see if I have been paid the correct amount? I think it seems a bit low.

Thanks.

  • Well, if you know your annual salary and you're paid monthly you should be able to work out what your gross pay should have been if they've paid you for the whole 9 1/2 extra days..

I've got a calculator here so if you give me your annual salary I can work it out for you if you like

Yeah I thought it should be that easy but would I have paid more tax and insurance etc.

    Annual salary £16125
Take home per month around £1087
december pay including 9 1/2 day was £1472.68
  • £1,087 for ~20 working days (a month) = ~£54 a day so 9.5 days holiday is around another £500 so it does look marginally light.

This is quite crude given it takes no account of tax allowance etc.

I would ask your boss how they worked it out.

Looks pretty close to me, maybe £10 down if that.

    I used http://www.thesalarycalculator.co.uk/salary.php

Put your current salary in at £16125 and it showed your net pay. Then I took yoour holiday (16125 / 260 = £62.02 per day x 9.5 = £589.19) and grossed it up to 12 months (£589.19 x 12 = 7070.28) added it to your salary (£23195.28) and put this into the calculator which showed a take home of £1494.03

Sorry I'm lost (maths not my strong point!). Where do you get the /260 from?

    If I take home £1087 for 20 days that = £54.35 day x 9.5 = £516.33 plus £1087 = £1603.33.

I'm assuming its not that simple?

I have made the assumption that you work 5 day weeks? Therefore worked days in the year are 5 x 52 = 260 days. Holiday would be worked out at 260th's to achieve a daily rate

but by working to out on your take home you are not taking into account your tax free allowance, looking at it it looks fairly close to me

    Tax 20% NI 11%

31% is a good estimate of deductions

    (16125 / 260 = £62.02 per day x 9.5 = £589.19) so £406

    £1087 + £406 = £1493

I would be asking for more info, but if using the PAYE tables it will be a little different to tax+NI at the flat rates.

Now 9 days would be £385.14 +1087 = £1472.14 so has he just given you 9 days ?

WHat are the gross figures on a normal and theis pay slip?

Slightly off topic - but not too far off, and for future reference... Assuming that all or some of the 9 and a half days leave are part of the statutory entitlement of 28 days, the employer is acting unlawfully in paying you for them unless there are some very specific reasons why they couldn't be taken (such as the fact that you are on long term sick or maternity leave). This may be the case but you didn't mention it, and it is worth noting so that you and others reading this don't get the mistaken impression that there is a general right to be paid for untaken holidays. The law specifically prevents employers from generally paying for holiday to prevent them from denying workers their legal holiday entitlements.
