VAT Increase!!!!

I went to purchase some rechargeable batteries and charger today to go along side my new camera which was purchased today.
Camera was advertised at £149.00 and cost £149.00 from Jessops.
I went into Robert Dyas to purchase batteries and charger, the charger was advertised at £16.99 but to my amazement when I got to the till it came up as £20.41 this is an increase of around 20% with my calculations on the advertised price. I worked out the extra 2.5% VAT increase should only be around 0.43p.
Has anyone else encountered 37% VAT?

Is £16-99 the excluding VAT price? £16-99 + VAT @ 20% is £20-38 so very close.0

£16.99 was advertised on the shelf ticket.0

Did you not question it at the till? sounds like a simple pricing error rather than them charging 37% VAT.Thinking critically since 1996....0

Perhaps Jessops has jumped the gun on the latest Tory wheeze of allowing retailers to rip consumers off by not having to advertise the VAT price. The greater danger, for most of us, lies not in setting our aim too high and falling short; but in setting our aim too low and achieving our mark0

It's not 2.5% added onto 17.5% though, it's 20% of the original price.0
-
But surely the advertised price of £16.99 included VAT of 17.5%, therefore only 2.5% should be added at the till!!!0
-
As already posted, why did you not query the price at the time. Probably a simple pricing error rather than anything to do with VAT. What does it say on your receipt, is there a VAT breakdown.0

If £16-99 included VAT at 17.5% then the new price should have been £17-35.
Did any of the prices mention that it was an excluding VAT price? Some places (espcially the ones that sell to business) tend to show net price on the shelf and then VAT is added on at the till.
Or they haven't updated their tills correctly.0 -
Was it this one - http://www.robertdyas.co.uk/P~133458~Energizer+1+Hour+Rapid+Charger+Kit+with+4+AA+Rechargeable+Batteries
Looks like the correct price, you sure the shelf price was for this item?0 -
