9 week old pup - small drop of blood after a poo

thanks in advance everyone

came with pedigree puppy complete and still giving her that, vet said was all ok and could be cos of the worming tablet or straining too hard to go, just worrying cos she's our first pup

As long as you have spoken to your vet I'm sure it's nothing to worry about...

... however it is a seriously bad idea to teach your puppy to go to the toilet indoors on paper.

When you decide that you no longer want her to go to the toilet indoors it will be much more diffcult to house train her.

    Your vet or the breeders?

TBH I'd be concerned a diet is leaving her with a hard poo. (usually but not always the tendency is to be very slightly soft side of normal IME with puppies). But you can't rush to change that.

we can't give veterinary advise here at all...rightly. If its not your vet whose seen her I'd take her to them, with a poo sample.

make sure she's got plenty of water, it could be just hard poo, but like lostinrates say's a poo sample would be good.
  • If it's any help, I feed my puppy James Wellbeloved. She's doing great on it. We have two small perfectly formed poos each day. No upset tummy or over pooing etc.

This will sound like a stupid question but is it definitely blood?

After each poo your dog will have a drop of fluid from her anal glands released that comes after the poo. It may be this liquid rather than blood. If you have already excluded this, apologies, I have no idea what the problem could be.

I wouldnt worry - if you have any concerns about the pup you should ask your vet as you have done - you are doing exactly the right thing. If the blood os bright red like fresh blood it tends to mean it is casued by something in the anus or nearby like overstraining - if the blood is dark this can mean that the problem is further up in the dogs system and needs further investigation - please make sure you tell your vet if the blood is dark or blackish.

with regard to the comment earlier about paper training dont worry that you are doing anything wrong - paper training is very effective in a lot of dogs and in fact is used by a lot of breeders - there are lots of techniques people use but whatever works for you and your pup is the best.

congrats about the new pup - I hope you are having lots of fun as well as the usual worrying

Absolutely. It is efffective in teaching your dog to pee on paper in the house. :) Breeders don't have to house train a pup just make it easy to clear up after a lot of pups.

Thanks everyone for your help and interest, i spoke to mrsbritishboy and we reckon its actully fluid thats picking up colour from her bottomhole on its way out, and the Vet did say there was nothing to worry when he looked her over on Friday tea time

We'll keep an eye on it and any change go to the vets with a sample

    Thanks again everyone
