Which credit card for student working in the US?

My 20 year old daughter is going to work in Florida for the Summer and she is looking at getting a credit card, just for emergencies.

She is a full time student but does work part-time but does not have a credit card at the moment.

Has anyone any suggestion which card would be the best for her?

  • If it really is "just for emergencies" and she has never had a credit card before she would be best to ask at the bank where she has her current account.

As she is working part time and I assume she is new to credit cards, it might be an idea to have her as an additional card holder on your account. This allows you to control the account overall. Her level of income may allow for a credit card but the limit may be very low.

Good advice. A single emergency (eg flight ticket bought at short notice) could cost more than any credit limit she can get.

if she is a sensible person then getting a CC and using it properly i.e. using it regularly but paying in full each month, will enhance her credit record which may be useful after she leaves Uni
