Things to do in Leeds

Hi,
I'm on the lookout for things to do in Leeds for the day!
We go quite a lot to Leeds and have done the usual things of the cinema, the art gallery (the one to the left of the cinema), and the museum that has an ancient Egyptian mummy in (no idea where that was). We've also been to tropical world too.
Does anyone else have any ideas on where to visit? We were thinking maybe the medical museum, I think it's called Thackray. If anyone knows where it is or how far outside the city centre it is that would be super, or opinions on it?
We kind of like cultural things, so museums, art gallerys etc are perfect. Also somewhere just to walk if it's not raining! We both travel by train to get there so somewhere close-ish to the train station would be super. And any bars too...so far all we ever go to is Yates' by the station, we need somewhere a bit more young that plays music! We saw Tiger Tiger but were a bit under-dressed for that.
Anyway thanks for any advice!

Bradford isn't far away (20 mins by train) for the National Museum of Film & Photography. And lots of curry houses!
The medical museum is near Jimmy's Hospital so not that central - you'd need to take a taxi or bus according to their website.0 -
i like the medical museum - there are loads of buses that go there, think they go from near the train station but not 100% sure so ask at the tourist information which is in the train station.
Roundhay Park is nice to walk around, next to Tropical World, and the 2 and 12 buses go there every 5-10 mins. Temple Newman is nice too, there's the house and the farm there, not sure about how to get there though! There is now a 'Leeds Sightseeing' tour bus now but that only runs in summer i think now.
If its nice, Kirkstall Abbey is gorgeous and by the river so its a lovely walk, adn across the road is the abbey house museum - a bit on the history of Leeds and it has a Victorian Street inside as well!
In terms of bars, if you let me know your taste in music and age I'll be happy to recommend some places - such a variety in Leeds which is great!!0 -
Presumably you've been to the Royal Armouries museum ?0

Hi
We need some sort of idea of how old you are and what you like.
Walking;
1. go out of the station, cross to the cycle thingie and go down the adjecent stairs. Turn right at the bottom, walk under the rail bridge, and walk almost ot the other side, but turn right again under the "Dark Arches." Once you get out the other ise, you are on the canal basin and can walk up the canalside for miles. If you come off at Armley Mills or Kirkstall, there is a museum within walking distance and a good number of buses back to town from the Kirkstall Road.
2a. Pick up a bus to Headingley - stops are near the cinema you describe but the other side from the Art Gallery on Albion Street. Get off a Headingley shopping centre. Cross over the road, walk back towards town, a few yards and once you get to the south end of the centre/parade, turn left into a suburban street, This is a good 5 minutes walk. You will come out into an open area at the top of a hill. Turn rightish under a block of mansion flats intp an area known as Woodhouse Ridge. This is a couple of miles of urban space ruinning along a steep valley. At the far end picck up a bus from the main mean wood road.
2b, as above but when you get to the top of the hill, walk down the hill, pick up the meanwood valley trail and walk out to the Holliies. You can pick up buses back into town from adjecent to the main gatehouse.
3. Get the 12/13 out to Oakwood Clock or Roundhay park. very large urban park with lake and tropical house plus some restaurants.
4. Pick up the the X84 to Otley, Ilkley and Skipton. Good walks from Ilkley (moor, baht at) and addingham (to Bolton Abbey)/
5. learn about the dalesbuses. www.dalesbus.org.uk You need to make a day of it.If you've have not made a mistake, you've made nothing0 -
Depending on when you are coming, and what your likes are.....

Sorry for the late reply, three days at work!
So, I'm 26 and my partner is 21.
I'm a typical 26 year old, love shopping, cinema, bars, walking and anything random! My partner however loves anything cultural, so the art galleries and museums are of particular interest. Anything ancient Greece, medical related (studying to be a doctor) he loves.
Bars wise, we both like anything chart, dance, but were only there until about 8pm on a night due to the trains home. Were going tomorrow so I'm imagining the weather won't be too good as it isn't here in Durham today.
We've been down by where the new Mint hotel is, that was quite a nice place to sit and look at the stars at night, even if it was freezing! But yeah...all your suggestions are great thank you and we'll both take a proper look through them later.0 -
how did you get on ? hard as nails on the internet . wimp in the real world :cool:0

We decided to follow google maps and walk to Thackray museum. It took us on a long long walk in the depths of Leeds!
Anyway the museum, I think we would've enjoyed it a lot more if we weren't surrounded by schoolchildren on trips. Every room we went in kids were there so we felt like we had to leave so they could watch the video/all be in the room at the same time.
After that we went to the cinema, which was fine. And then tried Bar Risa right next to it. It was absolutely dead! This was at about 5pm, a few people came in and out but it was ok just to sit and talk in, we had a good day. That was it!
Were going back next Wednesday though, so that'll be an orange Wednesday's trip to the cinema and another hunt to find a half decent bar!0 -
Bar Risa is absolutely awful! If you go out in Leeds again have a look at Sandanistas (About five mins walk from Bar Risa) or the Dry Dock which is up near Leeds Met SU in the centre!0
