problem with prepaid mastercard - declined on first use

I went into John Lewis to buy a laptop bag today as a means of spending a 25 pound Mastercard gift card (Christmas present) and the payment was declined. It wad new out of the pack, and not nicked (well assuming my aunt hasn't taken up shoplifting).

Has anyone else come across this type of problem with these sort of gift cards? Not that I would conceive of sending money to people this way; with its 3 quid fee it's worse than postal orders!

It says on the pack "Your Mastercard gift card is ready to spend as soon as this pack is purchased"

and

"This card has an initial value of £25 after activation at the till"

So I suppose they might have "forgotton" to activate it. I hope my aunt has kept the receipt...

Definitely not Activated if it has been refused.

The card has to be activated either by phone or at the till.
