Hi There
We recently changed the balustrade on our stair. It was 330 approx for materials, 2 and a half Oak newel posts, 3.5metres of oak handrail and 33 unpainted pine spindles. All from the door store.
Joiner fitted it for 250. Paint was expensive at about 200 including the paint which we bought.
Basic spec for a semi's stair. Yours does sound kinda dear.
Sorry I cant offer an alternative to the doors store, but i hope this is of some help0 -
Have you priced a private joiner with a lathe - this may work out cheaper than the door store and he could fit them too.If my post helps you, please click the 'thanks' button. :T0

I guess now with the vat up to 20%, I need 40 spindles, 2 and a half newel posts and 2 baserail and 2 handrail, and the joiner was a guy recommended from doorstore to fit, maybe will try an independent joiner he may be able to get wood at cost price somewhere, running out of options now0 -

I got my staircase replaced about 4 or 5 years ago. I can't remember how much of everything I got, but I imagine it is a similar spec to Conor, for a standard semi. I got plain spindles and newel posts and as I wanted to paint it all white I just got the cheaper pine. From what I can remember the materials cost about £250 and the labour another £250. I got everything from the Door Store, and used one of their joiners.
That price does look very high - even allowing for me using soft wood and the increase of the cost of the materials. Unless you have a huge staircase I think I would definitely look for other quotes.0 -
I dont have a huge staircase, my house is about a 3 bed 2 reception, that quote was for oak staircasing,
I just priced the cheapest pine ones and they are £194.94 including VAT, I didnt look at them originally because of the guys in doorstore said the pine will eventually look very orangey
The joiner from doorstore wants £500 to fit, mayb I should try another joiner from door store
If I get the cheapest and paint white, how often would I need to repaint as I think the white would turn yellowy eventually0 -
I just got my handyman to paint them (rather than a professional painter), and I think he just used normal white undercoat and gloss. The only thing I should have done was treat the knots in the wood as they are starting to show through. I must have mine done 5 years now, so I suppose that is good going! They haven't had much abuse - I have 2 young teenage daughters who are reasonably careful - and apart from the knots showing through I am happy with how they still look. Though when I try and touch them up I will probably notice a difference and end up repainting the whole thing!0

Use a local joiner. Doorstore joiners seem abit dear. Any local joiner will bite your hand off for some extra work at the moment, so price around.
If you're painting white, buy the whited primed ones and you'll only need one coat to finish.
If you don't smoke in the hall, stairs and landing, you'll not need to repaint untill every 6-10 yrs.0 -
We dont smoke, but I have 2 young children so will take a lot of abuse Id imagine, but cheapest option is too paint white
Will price around would rather get someone thats recommended!0
