costco, is it worth it?

Options
Hi, I have been offered the chance to join costco, but just wondering if it is worth paying the £30 membership fee? Is it a lot cheaper than other places?

They'll happily let you go in and have a wander around before joining so you'll be able to make up your own mind. Or do a search here - its a common question.
  • I'd like to join but my lack of a "proper" job currently prevents me. If they are now selling memberships, that might suit me better than having to jump through hoops in order to prove that I am solvent. LoLo, how did you get offered that option?

it was through work, but even through work you have to pay the membership.
  • I work in the NHS and joined a few weeks ago, and think I've definitely bought a few bargains - I went yesterday and for a £15 shop I got 24 tins of coke, 27 cartons (packed lunch size) of apple juice, 30 bottles of water (packed lunch size) 24 fruit shoots, 20 large packets of raisins and some salami. This will last about a month!
  • It doesnt take much to get a membership to Costco, print some business acrds and use one of them. They are not strict, as long as you pay the membership.

I can save £30 in one visit just buying cases of Pepsi Max. Not everyuthing in Costco is cheapest. Special offers in Supermarkets usually beat them, they are advertising a HD ready TV for £1600 that they say costs £2100 in the shops but Ive found it online for £1600.

    Personally I think it is.
Been a member for over 10 years.

The trick is not to buy the things you don't need (like any shopping)
Their meat is fantastic, not sure where it is sourced from mind you.

As other have said not everything is cheaper and often supermarkets have better offers on booze, but if you can join - you will save your money alright.
We all evolve - get on with it
  • we made a visit last month when the loo roll was on offer and I worked out that I saved about £60 on the loo roll (on a like for like basis) and about £30 on other things. However, given that I would not normally buy the velvet loo roll but own brand, the saving was more like £30, so £60 all in all which isn't bad at all. The best buy for me was the English Provender Lazy Garlic tub which saves about £5 on the equivilant weight in jars and alsts for three months open. Also, a mixed tray on Heinz soup worked out about 35p a tin which is a big saving.

i like costco, i tended to go like every week and just get my bits and pieces from there. there is only two of us so we dont have to buy too much... as mentioned above they do cheap drinks there.

also, i bought some jordans country crisp yesterday, they were 3.99 for 3 boxes... they are normally 1.99 for a box in tesco, 1.50 at special offers...

costco always does some really yummy ribs for 9 pounds which have 4 individual packs inside, 900g of mussell in garlic sauce for 2.50....
and my OH loves their sticky toffee pudding- they come in 2 packs and they are around 4.50, much cheaper than any other supermarket...

oooh and from a visit from yesterday: one big tub of jelly beans!!! they look so pretty and it weights at 1.8kg. it was about 12 pounds which is good for jelly beans.... great for xmas!!!

Their chocolate muffins are to die for! (Which incidently you might if you try to eat the whole tray of 12 of them by yourself...) Their birthday cakes are £9.99 for a HUGE cake (I'm talking american kinda size here...). Canned drinks are cheap as are most drinks. Washing liquid and fabric softener is cheaper on a litre to litre like for like basis. Their BBQ ribs are delishious and we bought our telly from them. It's broken twice BUT because you get a 3 year warrenty with it free they send out an engineer who looks, says "hmmm yes it's not working - take it back" and you take it back with his report and they give you a full n questions refund. You can then go buy another one the same or a different one if you want :)
Seriously I have been a member for YEARS and I go when I get near one (I even buy my tires there which are the cheapest I can get like for like) so I'd say go for it! :)
