The Satmap products look superb, but do you really want to spend £300 plus?
A lot depends on how functional you want it to be. If you really want to navigate on it, or download routes from a PC to it, then a Satmap (or one of the similar products from others such as Garmin and Magellan) would be good.
If you just want to be sure you won't get lost, even the most basic hand-held (e.g. the original Garmin eTrex range) will show a "breadcrumb" trail, so you can always either backtrack along the route you came or - if you waypoint mark your starting point - follow a straight line path back to the start.
If considering something like Ovi Maps, make sure that it has a proper "navigate on foot" mode, because if it doesn't, all it will do is constantly show you a straight line path to the nearest road!0 -
There is a good, but expensive, satnav which uses the Ordnance Survey maps (1" and 2½") which you also have to buy. Can't find the manufacturer but it isn't Garmin! (It may even be the SatMap device you allude to!)0

I've used Ovi maps but if you have a Nokia and Ovi store download the sports tracker app. That maps GPS in walking/cycling/running mode, how far you've gone etc and all sorts of other usleful info and does track the GPS accurately not just a straight line. Forgot to say the app is a free download so money saving too!!
I use it lot when i'm walking and cycling.0 -

lol! thanks for the laugh!
I too go wandering off with my dog - and get lost often. Sounds like you're inquisitive like me, and think "ooh, I wonder where this leads to" then get home 4 hours later?Look at it this way... In a hundred years who's gonna care?0 -
any phone that has a GPS these days will support google maps and, provided you have data available it can download the map off the net and give you directions too.
i too used to go for "walkies" that regularly stretch for so long that the dogs used to need a lie down half way through lol.
alas it seems my days of walking are limited to walking up and down the high street or to and from uni :P0 -
Funny that I have just posted a reply re cycling GPS on Android in Mobile phones section with similar problem.
Google navigator which is already installed on Android phones has a walkers route option
There is also an android app called gvSig Here you can download free of charge 1 :10000 and 1:50000 OS maps as well as lots of specialist maps all genuine and free of charge under the OS OpenData scheme0
