Getting credit card for travel

Hi,

I have never wanted a credit card and do not want one for borrowing money, however think the time has come to get one for large payments, and booking holidays; flights etc and other expenses for the security/insurance aspect. I don't know where to start! Anyone got any advice for me? (I am currently a full time student nurse living off savings earnt from my previous job if this makes any difference). I would intend to pay off the card in full every month.

Thanks!

  • I suppose the first step would be to check with your bank to get a credit card (if you have never had one before then going to your bank might be a good starting point). You could also look into a couple of good credit cards for use abroad, which are Halifax Clarity Mastercard or Nationwide VISA card.

Add to the list Post Office credit card which is also free overseas. (NW Visa is 1%, though I think that is only outside Europe.)

Also Santander Zero - though only if you're already a customer.

I'm guessing if you haven't had much credit before, and given your relatively low income, you might not have so much choice. So yep, start with your own bank. If no luck then go for one of the so-called sub-prime cards. Then after a several months you might find you have a wider choice.
