Insurance for extended family holiday

We are going on a family holiday with six people from 5 years old to 73 years old (two parents, two children and two grandparents)

What would be the best insurance option? (the grandparents have their own annual insurance policy allready, don't know if thats any use in this case)

Do we need to buy single trip cover as a group?

i always find that if everyone in the party has at least insurance with the same insurance company it always helps, but not essential.

Depending on how old the kids actually are, maybe a family policy for the 2 kids / 2 parents, as the kids normally get a very good rate, if not free.

and agaian - a single trip verses an annual policy - depends on how many times you plan on using it within the year (usually from the date the policy is issued - not the date of the first trip).

Finally, just make sure you have no bank accounts that might give you free travel insurance included. I have with the Natwest and, even though the account is just in my name, it covers the OH and any dependant kids (had we had any).

However the main point to remember is to make sure you have insurance that is suitable for your needs, and sort it out as soon as possible once you have booked your holiday.

    Have a great holiday.

  • If the parents took out their own family policy for them and the children and the grandparents used their annual policy what would happen if one of the group fell ill and could not travel? Would the insurer cover individuals who are not on their policy?

For instance grandparawnt falls ill - cannot travel, lead traveller (parent) contacts insurer to say cannot proceed with holiday as an indivdual who is not a policy holder is ill? Would grandparents policy cover cost of other group travellers even though not on their policy?

I am concerned it would get v. messy.

Paul, that can be the problem with some insurance companies if you have seperate policies, however it's getting better than what it used to be.

You would need to check with the individual insurance companies as to what would happen, and i would expect a more posative response from the insurance considering you are all family, as most insurance will cover immeadiate family. However it may be that you all have to be on the same booking to qualify.
