Car insurance is not for YOURSELF it is for the other person.

So its not for damage to property then !!

OH had an accident where he scraped the side of another car. We exchanged insurance details but the other driver had a look and said he felt it could be t-cutted out and wouldn't bother with insurance.

When I was changing insurers, I phoned our then insurers to check how long our no claims bonus was for - I was then informed that 3 years previously someone had made a claim against us and been paid but because we had no claims protection it had not affected our premiums.

Our insurers did not contact us in any way to say that a claim had been made or to ask for our side of the story (although in this instance we were totally to blame). We were not even contacted to say that a claim had been settled.

I assume that when he had this incident you exchanged insurance details like you said and you would have notified your insurers of the incident, (as you are contractually obliged to do) - by doing this you have in effect given sanction for your insurers to deal with the incident in whichever way they feel appropriate, ie, pay the 3rd party claim in full, in part or repudiate on your behalf.
  • You are buying an insurance indemnity to cover YOURSELF - not other motorists or property - I stand by what I have posted and hopefully someone with some insurance knowledge will confirm I am correct !!

Tecnically 3rd party insurance is to cover yourself for any liability towards damage costs you cause. The policy will reimburse the third party for your liability. It is a legal requirement so you are both right: it covers the third party costs which you would be liable for.
If I had a pound for every pound I'd lost, I'd be confused

Yes, the OTHER PERSONS property! Unless you have fully comprehensive insurance, your property (car) is not covered!

    You posted this:
The third party cannot claim off your insurance without your say so.

    This is incorrect.

3rd party is a minumum requirement because most people could not afford the total costs that may be incurred due to car accidents (been known to run into millions after car accident). That is not to cover the owner of the car because they would not have paid for the damage even if they were liable. It is compulsory to cover that person who requires constant care or expensive damages to property.
That is why car insurance is compulsory whereas the majority of all other insurance is not.
You do not decide if this insurance will be paid out or not if YOU disagree!
  • You will see that it clearly states "This insurance covers YOU from the cost of any liability etc"

No one is arguing that point with you!

Your insurer will deal with a claim from a third party. If they consider you liable they will pay the claim on your behalf.

Don't know what point you are trying to make, but if you take out third party only insurance, it is clearly for the protection of others!.

Clearly you have now changed your mind then !!
