Sealed Item does not work-what should I do?

Need a bit of advice. I have sold a hard drive on ebay, which was brand new & still in its original sealed packet.
The buyer has received the item and has stated that it does not work. What should I do? As it is still sealed (well not now they have opened it) is it my responsibility? Or should I suggest he contacts the manufacturer?

    i would have thought you would need to get the item returned to you - test it if u can - if it is faulty u will need to take that up with wholever you purchased the drive from and refund your buyer

    Most hard drive manufacturers have online systems whereby you can enter the s/n of a drive and they tell you if it's still in warranty. After completing certain checks yourself (they provide the software/instructions), there will be a process for returning it for replacement/repair.

    I've done this a couple of times and don't remember ever being asked for proof of purchase. The simple fact the s/n of the drive equates to one that is still in warranty is enough for them.

    You could ask the buyer to do the above themselves, but they may not be prepared to do so. In which case, I think the only option is to accept a return and do it yourself.

    Maybe I'm being paranoid, but don't rule out the possibility they could return a faulty drive that wasn't the drive you sent them. Was it a retail package or oem? Double check the drive spec matches that of the box/what you sent, e.g. manufacturer, capacity, speed, cache, model number, etc.

    Another option would be to wash your hands of the whole thing and do nothing. But I wouldn't recommend that.
