Which site in Brittany?

We are looking to book a SUN holiday to France again, but this time in Brittany for May half term
( hubby has had enough of the sites near Disneyland Paris ,and says we need to explore other areas :rotfl:!)
this is the list of sites available ....

214Chateau Des Ormes
215Le Ranolien
216Les Mouettes
217Pointe St Gilles
218Port De Plaisance
219L'Atlantique
220Domaine De Kerlann
221Les Deux Fontaines
222Raguenes-Plage
223La Baie
224De La Plage
225Ty Nadan
226Les Menhirs
227La Grande Metairie
228Les Pierres Couchee

we need a site with a good pool for our 15 and 9 year old sons, some sort of sports would be good too
Also other things going on on / near the site, walks, town, maybe a beach etc would be good but not totally necessary if enough to do onsite

We plan to go via Eurotunnel to Calais ( we dont do ferries lol ) ,so will travel to Brittany in 2 stages I think,so ideas on where to stay overnight would be appreciated too

hubby wants to drive in one go ? but i'd like to take our time and stay over in one of the cheapy hotels for the night

Thanks for any info / recommendations etc

Why don't you pick up the Keycamp/Eurocamp brochures to get some sort of idea about the sites. Not been to any of them personally, but I know Chateau des Ormes has a large pool, l'Atlantique - the reviews say that the pools aren't as large as they look in the brochures. We are off to Les Deux Fontaines in August - very close to a lovely looking beach.
The only downside about going in May is that you will want to check that the sites' facilities are open - some don't open bits until mid June. And don't forget that the weather is going to be marginally better than here; not like down in the south of France. You may not want to be using an outdoor pool or beach.

    lol yeah I know :)

all the sites I have on my short list have indoor heated swimming pools, and we will bring bikes too

but TBH it could be from tipping down with rain all the way through to glorious sunshine ! lol

like in the UK we tend to get better weather for my sons bdays April & May than we do in July / Aug !

so long as it's dry we can still get out and about :)
and the outdoor pools open @ start of May ! so no doubt my 2 mad kids will still use them and the slides etc!! kids don't feel the cold so much do they !
  • Hi
Last year we went to La Grande Metarie The kids were almost 15 and 11 and they had a fab time, we went during May spring bank Hols, plenty of other kids onsite. Site has a couple of water slides, 3 outdoor pools 1 indoor with jacuzzi (although this was always full of kids), onsite bar and restaurant VERY REASONABLE! Plenty of sporty htings to do, they had table tennis, tennis, zip wire, football, volley ball and a few more all on site. The site is a small drive from a lovely sandy beach - the coast is clean and sandy with some lovely quiet coves. We ventured off for a couple of days but as the kids were enjoying themselves so much on the park we decided to stay poolside and totally relax.

We went via ferry to Caen and the drive was just under 4 hours (without pushing it) so I imagine it could be done in 1 day from calais.

    Hope this helps
  • The only ones I'm familiar with are Pointe St Gilles and L'Atlantique.
L'Atlantique is quite good as far as these sites go but a little way from major shops/things to do for your 15 year old. However there is a lovely picture perfect beach made out of sand dunes just the other side of this strange area of wetland that is a nature reserve and has a lot of birds you don't see in the wild so often.

Pointe St Gilles isn't quite as high a standard. It's still nice though, and it basically backs directly onto the town of Benodet, a fairly posh little resort with quite a quite a bit to do. There's also a beach just by the site, though it's not as large or photogenic. The pool facility is better than L'Atlantique.

Bear in mind this isn't 100% up to date but it should hopefully give you an idea about these two at least.

If you really can't get the ferry (a much better experience IMO) the drive is about 8 hours so do-able in one day but tiring. Obvious stop-offs include Caen, St-Malo and Dinan though the latter two are a little off-route if you are doing it in one day. If you are doing in two days I would suggest a quick stop-off in Mont St Michel on the way to Saint-Malo, spending the evening there (Saint-Malo) and some of the next morning, driving down to Dinan for a lunch break, and then completing your journey from there.

We did the Vendee last year and went under the tunnel rather than a ferry. Where you want to stop off will depend on what time you cross, but if I'm honest, we could have done the drive from Calais in a day. We stayed in near Rouen, the outskirts of which are lovely. The Etap hotel most certainly wasn't, so I can't recommend that for you!

Please ignore me - Rouen is no use as you're going to Brittany!

If you're going in the summer the ferry crossing is usually pretty flat and I've never had a problem. I recommend Brittany Ferries from Portsmouth-St Malo, you will get a couple of hours to look around the beautiful town in the morning before setting off for the campsite after an early lunch. That ferry route also has a very comfortable ship that is the most stable one I have ever been on in rough seas.

It really depends how seasick you get though, I know even the sight of a ship sets some people off. Hyoscine tablets or patches help (Boots sell them as own-brand Travel Calm Tablets quite cheaply).

  • Hi I visited Chateau des Ormes the year before last we a 5 year old and a 7 year old and we had a fantastic time there, plenty onsite to keep the kids busy the site is clean and spotless and kids love going to the provided day club, the pool were great although outdoor ones were a bit fresh as the weather was not splitting the skys which is the only reason we have not been back to be honest,I left quite impressed by the place hope this helps.
