Virgin Credit Card offer

I received a phone call from MBNA yesterday evening (6th) offering me a 0% for 9mths balance transfer with a 2.98 fee. I asked if I could do the transfer online and was told no.....and that it was just a phone offer.

I proceeded to do a transfer and have just noticed this evening (7th) that there are 2 offers available online. The 2.98% fee for a balance transfer or 4% fee for a money transfer.

The money transfer wasn't offered to me on the phone and it also states on the website that I have until the 8th to complete either transfer!!

I have been checking my account each day recently just to see if there are any offers available and it only appeared today, so it looks to me that if you dont check everyday, you could miss out.

I sincerely hope you confirmed the identity of the caller. I would never give out financial details to any telephone cold caller. I suggest you call MBNA yourself to confirm it was they who called if you are in any doubt about this.

MBNA usually have dual offers, and they will have sent you letters to tell you about them. If it is an online account, then they will send you emails. When you do the internet banking you will see the offers available to you.
  • Dont forget the person who sold you the transfer over the phone probably earnt a commission so its in their interest to say its not available online (as strictly speaking, it isnt)

I don't think the Operator would lie, as mentioned by Stoneman, it was a case of not being offered this second promotion. If he asked, he would have been told as all calls are recorded anyway.

Thanks for the warning, but I am in no doubt that the caller was genuine. They told me my existing balance (to the penny) and my limit and sounded genuine. Plus the offer online just reinforces that the offer must have been genuine, but I will take your advice and be a bit more careful in the future :D

I did think that the offer was only available on the phone so the operator could get commision and was surprised that she didnt offer the money transfer as the fee is more! Maybe I should have asked or at least tried haggling the fee or length of offer.

If it was a balance transfer you were after, then they cannot ill-advise, that would be misselling and they are more stringent now. In which case, they have given you the best available advice.
