my girlfriend just got fired today, how will we live?

hi everyone, im really just in need of some advice,
my partner got fired today for apparently gross misconduct which i think was a little but harsh.

what can we do to pay the bills, can we claim any benefits to survive. im on a very low wage and my wage alone doesnt cover our rent council and tax let alone food and fuel etc,

were really worried that if she cant find work soon we will be in real trouble.

we live in a rented house and have no children, we are both over 25.

neither of us has ever been unemployed/ fired since we left school so this is a totally new experience for us both.

i hope you can offer us some advice on what we can do.

many thanks.

James

How many years has she been in full time work for? She should claim JSA immediately, but it is likely that her claim will be sanctioned for up to 26 weeks.

You both should be entitled to some benefits\tax credits. You need to take yourselves down to the local benefits agency and explain your circumstances, dont delay it, as it inevitably always takes a while for the ball to start rolling.

NOW, would be her perfect opportunity to apply for another job.

  • gross misconduct she must of done somthing serious especially if she was in that job a long time. like DMG said there being let go and then theres getting the BOOT for misconduct wich can have sanctions as she did something to get the sack and there for her fault. ofcourse if she was perminant employee and been there a while and she feels that what she did didnt warrent gross misconduct, not in the employee hand book etc, then she should seek legal advice. she should apply for JSA as soon as possible at her local JCP.

Does she agree that she did something wrong? Or is it worth a challenge? You could contact your local CAB or ring ACAS for advice on the employment issue. Maybe they did not follow correct procedure?
Meanwhile you might be able to get housing benefit council tax beneft,. DO you get Working Tax Credit?
If she is not sanctioned, your gf should be able to get JSA contribution based. Contact your local JobCentrePlus or welfare office or CAB.

    Hi

She needs to claim contribution based JSA urgently. If she is sanctioned, then the start date of the sanction is when she claims, not when she lost her job. That also protects her NI contribution history for the future.
