i DID set up a direct debit!!!

hello everyone.

just had a phonecall from cc company (mbna) telling me i had missed a payment (therefore lost 0% deal).

however, i rang them early last month to set up a direct debit and was told it was sorted.

i've phoned them to try and sort it out but they say they have no record of my calls and i cant prove anything.

where do i stand? is there any way i can get that rate back??

help please...drdaz

Does it say on your statement that payment will be taken by direct debit?

0800 783 1116 (during office hours) gets you their customer loyalty department.

If MBNA said they have set it up, I would ring your bank to see if the instruction has been received. If it has and it's the bank's fault then maybe you can explain this to MBNA and get the rate back. But if they haven't and MBNA have no record of your phonecalls, I guess you don't have a leg to stand on.

If you have sent it in and bank has set it up and DD not taken, sometimes MBNA will warn you that the next payment may not be DD and must be a manual payment.
  • As others have said, it should say on your statement that the payment will be taken by Direct Debit if it's been set up - when I've switched to DD on credit cards they've warned me that the next months will probably still need to be paid manually as the DD won't be able to collect in time.

I'd go for the loyalty department and explain to them waht's happened, as they will be able to reinstate the 0% deal if they want to. Good luck - it's worth a good attempt and being really nice to the person in the loyalty department!

Did they not read you 'the script'?...
Your monthly Direct Debit won't take effect until your next statement is produced. In the meantime, you may need to make a payment using another method.

Source: MBNA's online DD set up information
Under the terms of the direct debit guarantee the originator must give you 10 days notice of both the amount and date to be collected. The only mechanism for doing this is the statement. It looks like your statement had already been produced when you set up the DD.
  • Did they send you written confirmation it was set up ?
I set up a direct debit with tsb and have the letter from them however the last 3 statements from them do not mention the direct debit and only ask for the minimum payment(not the 5% I offered to pay by DD)
Interest free period is almost up on it so its getting replaced.
I have a deep burning indifference

How did you set the direct debit up?
  • Something similar happened to me, it turned out that my direct debit had been deleted by my bank. They told me they are required to this after 13 month of no activity on a direct debit. They didn't inform me first though which would have been nice. They said the credit card company should have been informed and re-set it up. Nationwide credit card hadn't but the refunded the charges when i rang and complained and explain what my bank said.
