Help with travel to Vietnam around Easter

Hi all,

Going to book flights soon to Vietnam to visit my girlfriend's family, was wondering if anyone has any tips for the cheapest way to get over there? Don't mind flying elsewhere and getting buses or whatever if it saves a bit of cash.

Cheers!

I doubt if anything other than flying into Vietnam makes any sense. You could fly to Bangkok and travel overland but it would take several days and you'd have to pay for Thai and Cambodian visas. You could look into a cheap flight to Bangkok (KL, Singapore, HK or Seoul may offer alternatives) and a separate local airline flight to HCMC.

You can't fly directly to Vietnam from the UK - all flights route through KL, Hong Kong, Singapore or Bangkok (and possibly some other places in Asia - I've only listed the ones I am sure about).

To the OP, I'm not sure what flights you've already looked at, but last May I booked a reasonably priced flight just two weeks before I was due to fly. I used Travelpack (http://www.travelpack.com/) and flew with Malaysia Airlines via KL. IIRC I paid £570 rtn. For even cheaper flights, try Air Asia, Jetstar or Tiger Airways.

Note that you will need a visa to enter Vietnam. Tourist visas can only be issued by the Vietnamese Embassy in London (http://www.vietnamembassy.org.uk/). You cannot get a tourist visa on arrival in Vietnam if arriving on a flight that originated in the UK.

    Hope that helps.
