I agree that this is a bit of a pain, but I have noticed that this seems to be happening most nights this early in the morning. I guess this is a generally quiet time for sales.

Nobody shops at that time in the morning. The sites have to updated or upgraded at some time, and often it will need downtime. Their alternative is to do it during normal hours, when the sites would be busy, and when dropping them would cost a lot more in lost sales. And spare a thought for the poor people in there at 0130 trying to get everything done as quickly as possible!
