Cancelling credit card accounts

Can anyone help please?
I have just completed a credit check and i still have a few open credit card accounts, I don't use them anymore and the balance on them is zero and the cards have been cut up years ago. So the other day i phoned each company and tried to get them all cancelled but unfortunatly each one came back saying we don't have any of your details on our data system anymore, one said the account would have been closed because there has been no activity on that card for years. The trouble is the credit checkers are still showing i have got the credit availiable but the account is dormant. I'm wanting to do a balance transfer but with these outstanding accounts this will affect what credit the new card will give me.
I am at a loss at what i can do.
Many thanks if you can help.

credit accounts stay on your file for a few years after they are settled. if you think it shouldnt be there, you can get in touch with whatever company you did the credit check with and query it with them.0
